Yes , I reckon they are sending us a message .

They are trying to tell us to do as they want, or suffer the consequences.

Stubborn people , like ourselves , who resist being pressured into moving to W10 , will continue to have our systems periodically
    vandalised by MS UpBorks.

I was going to say " upgrade" to W10 , but the word upgrade is a highly questionable point at this stage.
Just think back to how many Vista users wanted to get their XP systems back , once they'd had a chance to sample the "quality" of Vista !

But look on the bright side , the word is that W10 will once again have the " Start " button.
Surely a major leap forward in software technology ? .... that may have come out sounding a little cynical .... if so , my apologies

    ..... Newer ALWAYS means better ( doesn't it ? ) - :)

Yeah, we wouldn't want to start sounding cynical. ;)

The Lenovo laptop I bought six months ago was preinstalled with Ubuntu, which is based on Debian. It's the first laptop I have ever purchased without a Microsoft operating system. I am perfectly happy with it. In fact, it's probably the best laptop I've owned. It certainly won't be the last computer I buy not running/preinstalled with a Microsoft OS.

Hi guys - 3 more optional updates appeared yesterday. No need to say but I will - I've hidden them all.

KB2952264 Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems - Enables present windows version to upgrade to latest.
KB3068708 Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems - Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry.
KB3050265 Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems - Update client for Win 7,
This update addresses an issue in which the Windows Update Client displays an out-of-memory error during the scan operation (0x8007000E) on systems that have small amounts of physical RAM.
General improvements are made to support upgrades to a later version of Windows.

zapjb, thank you. I did find only one in the task scheduler and disabled it. Reason could be if I hadn't installed some of those Win 7 updates and did hide them. My memory is failing often even though I wrote the KB#s down that I did hide and/or uninstalled.

The way this is going I see M$ forever pushing these w10 related updates. Only way I see these stopping is through legal intervention.

What happens if you 'accidentally' delete those two tasks?

 I wasn't paying attention and instead of disabling those two tasks I deleted them. If anyone knows if that matters I would appreciate suggestions about what to do about it.

    Thanks.

The debate "install or not install some updates" has value only for the people who want to keep the current 7/8/8.1 OS.

It's pointless for the rest who intent to go for Win 10, imo.
Who cares for what will be installed into a condemned to death OS which will die after 55 days?

If it creates a problem you can restore a recent image that was taken prior to the deletions.

OK, so I'll just keep an eye on things then and will restore an image if I have any problems.

    Cheers,

Even if you want to keep actual used OS (7/8/8.1), i think it's better to install all updates and just deactivate/block all stuff (telemetry, CEIP.........), cause some of these updates contain some updated system files not related to "Windows 10 Upgrade", and it depends how you set Windows when you do a fresh install (task scheduler, gpedit.msc, services.msc, windows components like IE, WMP, registry....).
Anyway when you fresh install for example Windows 7 SP1, microsoft already spying on you.

Here is a list of scheduled task (1 month old) that you can deactivate (MS-DOS), Windows 7/8/8.1

You can create a batch file (*.cmd).

My bold and my edit above ....

Excellent post Rules , many thanks .
I naively thought that disabling CEIP , and Application Experience in Task Scheduler would keep MS out of my system .... Doh !

The only effect I noticed was that I no longer get offered updates that I had already hidden , and it was starting to irritate me ....
.... but that could be for other reasons.

On my two W7x64 computers, I split the difference... one is getting the Macrium Reflect treatment prior to installing today's updates, and the other I just applied the updates without creating a backup. Living conservatively dangerously, I am.

No issues so far with the updated machine.

Edit in: All is well on both computers with 22 & 19 updates respectively.

Did a Macrium image this morning, then installed the 8 updates that I got today. No problems, no issues.. but it's nice to have a backup just in case.

June's borkfest ... will it be a D-Day, or just Carry on Borking? lol

KB3033890 MS15-057: Vulnerability in Windows Media Player could allow remote code execution: June 9, 2015

This security update resolves a vulnerability in Windows. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if Windows Media Player opens specially crafted media content that is hosted on a malicious website. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system remotely. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less affected than users who operate with administrative user rights.

KB3057839 MS15-061: Vulnerabilities in kernel-mode drivers could allow elevation of privilege: June 9, 2015

This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Windows. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow elevation of privilege if an attacker logs on to the system and runs a specially crafted application. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts that have full user rights.

KB3059317 MS15-060: Vulnerability in Microsoft common controls could allow remote code execution: June 9, 2015

This security update resolves a vulnerability in Windows that could allow remote code execution if a user clicks a specially crafted link or a link to specially crafted content and then invokes F12 developer tools in Internet Explorer.

KB3063858 MS15-063: Vulnerability in Windows kernel could allow elevation of privilege: June 9, 2015

This security update resolves a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow elevation of privilege if a user visits a network share (or visits a website that points to a network share) that contains a specially crafted file. However, in every case an attacker would be unable to force a user to visit such a network share or website.

As I have MPC-HC x64 as my default media player and never use WMP do I really need to install KB3033890? I'm wondering about a similar thing with KB3059317 as I never use IE.

To bork or not to bork, that is the question. As usual, I'll wait a couple of weeks to see which of these borkers starts to frag people's systems. Carry on ...
