Thanks JR for confirming what Dragon1952 reported about the optional update 3177467 (Servicing stack update) getting offered.
The strange thing is that I don't get it offered on Win 7 Pro 64-bit (Dutch). I don't know why. The MS kb 3177467 article gives hardly any info about it; it is a mystery, well at least to me.

If MS Is offering you Win 10, it Is probably because they read the license in the firmware and found it valid.

If it Is an OEM computer, you could check the documentación, or ask them.

If you have previously installed Windows 10 on that computer it will have digital entitlement which menans that Microsoft will recognise your computer and it will be automatically activated when you install Windows 10 without needing a product key to be entered.

    Neither will I.
I was surprised that the update was rereleased, as it is associated with upgrading to Windows 10, and Microsoft stopped pushing the upgrade.
    I hid optional update KB2952664.
And now I am curious whether it will be included in next week's October "Monthly Rollup". That would be rather annoying.

I'm curious about that too and about whether GWX Control Panel (which I keep installed) will jump in and how that will be going in case KB2952664 is included in the October "Monthly Rollup".

More likely, sales of Windows 10 have been a dud and Microsoft is preparing to renew its free Windows 10 upgrade offer with no time limits.

I wouldn't be surprised if they announced it in the near future.

Hi JR, thank you for the link!

    Hi mantra,

Let's talk about 2952664. I just read the article from Woody to which JR pointed in reply # 2684.
Instead of quoting the article I think that I'd better point to it, as JR did. Because the article describes the initial situation and confusion about whether 2952664 was offered as important and/or as optional, and the actual revision number and date of the kb article.
Anyways, I just checked in the last hour for updates and it is now offered as optional.

What's weird, at least in my case, is that KB2952664 appeared as Optional, and the other Optional update (KB3177467, which I did not hide) was not there. As soon as I hid KB2952664, and did a check for updates, KB3177467 reappeared again. :shifty:

The time has probably come to switch off Win updates completely.
I don't think MS updates enhance my machine's protection that much, I would rather rely on my own set up - in fact MS Borkdates are becoming a threat themselves !

I was just reading that October 31, 2016 is the last day that OEMs can offer a new W7 PC for sale due to standing agreements OEMs have with Microsoft. I also read that if you buy one of these new W7 PCs you might find a second partition on the hard drive with the necessary folders and files to install Win 10. Most of the folders and files are locked as system files so they cannot be deleted. This would indicate that a new W7 PC purchased now from an OEM would not need to run KB2952664 as it will have already been pre-checked for compatibility.

Microsoft often changes the optional updates (now called preview updates) to important on patch Tuesday. That means KB2952664 will be in the October Monthly Rollup offered through Windows Update. No point playing 'whack a mole' .

Did you search for the *664 update in your installed updates list by entering it in the search box at the top of the 'installed updates' page?
