    Hi Guys,

I've been breaking down and fixin computers since i was 10 yo, but now i'm for the first time in a deadend so i'll take a chance and see if some of you gurus can help me.

I have an Asus laptop with one 640GB SATA drive and Windows 7 Professional 32bits.

I have 2 partitions, both NTFS one (C:) of 100GB (the one with windows) and the other with the remaining GBs. (D:) used for Photos, videos, movies, ect.

As i do not work repairing computers for like 2 or 3 years I did not knew the problems involved in Partition management application installed in Windows7.

    This is what happened.

Sunday 18/12/2011 - Installed partition magic 8 to create a partition to an external USB drive (Obviously did not work, and then i found out the tool that win7 provides to do this)

Tuesday 20/12/2011 - I found out that D: disk was not visible anymore on MyPC, but i did not alert i was tired and i went to sleep.

Wednesday 21/12/2011 - I tried to use win7 partition manager but the partiton was unnaccesable. So i read in some cr*p forum to instal Acronis. Some errors raised douring the instalation and then asked me to restard. I did not alert.
But when i restarted plaf.. Bootmgr not found.. blablabl..

I spend 4 hours, with Windows 7 installation CD, trying to repair the partition tables entering in CMD in the advanced repair options used /Fixboot /Fixbcr.. ect.. I've tested all i found in the internet. Nothing.

I saw that C is now the 100mb partiton as System reseved and D is the old C with windows and all the info. But still no clues about the old D: 500gb partition.

Can you recommend any good bootCD with a program to fix partition tables one and for all. I'm sure that this is a logical error, not phisical. But i have lots of info that i would not like to loose.

If someone can help me, i'll appreciate it until the end of times.

    Thank you very much,
Best Regards / Saludos cordiales / Mit freundlichen Grüssen.

    Nicolas,

Download BootIt BM. There is a 30 day trial usage. Unzip the file and make a boot CD.

    http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootit-bare-metal.htm

    double click makedisk.exe, next
dot in BootIt Bare Metal, next
dot in I accept the agreement, next
don't select Image for DOS (GUI), next
dot in Mouse Support Enabled, next
    dot in VESA Video, next
dot in Video Mode 1024*768 - 64K Colors, next
dot in Partition Work (Don't put a dot in Normal), next
don't choose any Device Options, next
tick in Enable USB 1.1 (UHCI), next
tick in Align Partitions at 2KiB
tick in Use Windows 7 MBR, next
    ignore Additional bootitbm.ini Options, next
select your CD burner drive letter (you can use a CD-RW or a CD-R disc)
    Finish

Can you tell me what you see in the Work with Partitions box.

Click View MBR. Which is the Active partition?

Please don't try to fix anything. Get back to us.

Beat me to it (recommending BootIT BM)...this should do the trick. As he said, let us know before doing anything. Thanks!

    Brian/napoleon,

Does BootIt BM boot into DOS (or another OS)?

You could use Partition Find and Mount to copy files from the data partition to an external drive before using any other tools. There's a boot cd with Partition Find and Mount on it, but I won't mention its name here - you can Google for it though.

    download gparted livecd.
when you bootup with it, at the terminal type testdisk. Then follow the directions on the the screen.
I had a similar situation (but using xp) where I was partitioning a 400gb harddrive when the partitioning failed. With testdisk it was able to restore the partitions and all the data over 300gb.
Testdisk fix worstcase scenario for me and its a free software too.

Feedback would be nice. That is the price one pays for asking a question in a forum. So you owe us for solving your problem.
