    IMHO nothing beats your own domain, hosting and Wordpress install you have much more flexibility over themes and plugins plus you control your own content and data.

    For a remotely hosted option, Wordpress.com would be my pick.

    For the non-techy, you should try both www.Blogger.com and www.wordpress.com, these are both deservedly popular blogging services.
    IMHO get an account with both and have a play just to get used to how blogging works.

    Wordpress (www.wordpress.org) can be selfhosted is good and very popular, only major downside is the large amount of times it gets exploited due to poor quality coding.

    If you want to have light blogging option than Tumblr or Posterous are worth a try.
