BitDefender is the one for me. Detection wise KAV might be a lil better, but BitDefender is improving and their new pro-active method is gonna be very good. Their price is lower then Kasperksy's product too. Also BitDefender runs much faster then KAV on my system.

My Advice, trial them both since they're both good :)

Whether I use it or not, Kaspersky is THE BEST antivirus. Bitdefender is very good.
KAV always wins in the tests.

    Hi,

BitDefender is the only AV that I have run in the last year or so (I've tried most of the majors), that has found some annoying (as opposed to malicious) malware that KAV missed. I run KAV in real-time but I scan using BitDefender's online scan. Even the best, sometimes can't cover everything.

Signature detection is NOT everything ;)

BitDefender has a very decent heuristics engine, and very good signatures. KAV on the other hand has a relatively poor heuristics engine, and the best signatures....

Both are quite good though, but my choice is very slightly tilted towards BD :D

What is the new pro-active method to which you refer? Heuristics or something else?

BitDefender recently announced a new heuristics engine called HIVE. It has proven to be quite good, even though its not fully implemented.

When it is 100% implemented by the end of this year, it could be competing quite well with NOD32.....

Currently its not as good as NOD32 AH, but its quite impressive anyway ;)

Does it run light like NOD? Gamers like NOD for it's lightness. Sorry about additional questions that are not thread related.

Not quite as light as NOD in my personal experience.

  20. On my system....BD runs much faster than NOD...only with one of the Betas
did my machine run fast...the rest dragged down my surfing.

    BD scans about 21 minutes....KAV MP3 over a hour.

BD has a registry protecter....it does as good as prevx on reg. test.
with the last update BD now has 169208 signatures

KAV has never found anything after a scan with BD

Hmmm, on my box BitDefender is slightly slower than Kav, 8-10 minutes versus 7-8 minutes for Kav, it just shows you that these figures are very dependant on what system they are installed on.

But, both are very good AV's, no doubt about that. :)

I keep a PIII 450 with 128 MB for software testing. Under W2k KAV exhibits better memory management than Bitdefender by using less active memory although total resource usage is not all that different.

However, when compared to KAV MP3 beta 2, the most recent Bitdefender (pro with firewall and anti spam disabled) the latter definitely showed less drag on the system. KAV was set up with network protection off and the high speed setting for real time.

On a faster system I would prefer KAV, and the detection rate for KAV is 99.65%, not 96.65%. That is impressive. Heuristics or not, Bitdefender did not pro actively identify the recent worm outbreak that was recently documented in one of the PC magazines. I look forward to the next AV-Comparatives test and would not be surprised to see a significant improvement from Bitdefender.
