Is it just me, or does Bitdefender want to update a HELL of a lot? It always interrupts what I am doing and wants to be updated.....3 times a day..

    Hey TrBot,

I have split your post out of that Update Forum thread due to our Update Alerts Posting Policy.

Well 3 times a day is a lot...but those who use KAV or KAV-engine AVs wont be surprised as KAV gets an update every hour. Personally I saw only 2 updates a day with BD when I used it as an On-Demand AV for two weeks (LOL :D)

bit defender updates mostly two times a day and very rarely only 3 times a day..you can always configure the update settings from the central console..

You can't configure it like that with the free version. I find it a bit irritating as I only run a scan about once a month. I use it for right click scan of all downloaded files so I like it to be up to date...but several times a day...that is really too much. Usually the first try won't update. Says it is updated but it really isn't and I have to try again. So, I would prefer less frequent updates. As for KAV every hour is ridiculous unless porn, gambling and illegal music stealing is your life on the internet.

Once or twice a day is enough for any AV I think

Well, I hate BitDefender's update method... Sometimes it just reboots your computer :S weird program, I tested BitDefender many times, 6.5, 7.x, 8.x but this agressive update thing is one of the biggest downsides of the program...

I don't engage in any of these activities, But I still like the hourly extend data base updates. It is all personal preference. I am glad that everyone doesn't have the myopic view on this that you do.

I personally think one or two updates a day is enough...but I do really appreciate the hourlies as I have time to get at least 8 out of 24 hourlies...:)

Besided, hourlies ensure the fastest response time for zoo malware even.

this hourly updates is not at all a problem for me -bitdef std..though i dont know about the free version..it updates automatically/silently ..i have deliberately kept it on autoupdate every 1 hour ..a matter of personal preference as big c pointed out...i just want the updates as soon as possible and for sure .

I use BitDefender Free as on demand only, so I manually update weekly just before my scan. That way I can watch it and make sure it connects gets the update and installs it O. K., "and for sure". ;)

You have nothing to lose to get hourly updates to get the best overall protection from any possible type of malware from premier antivirus namely Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

On the other hand, if hourly updates just only provide so-called zoo malware, little-spreading worm or uninteresting trojans but we never know that updates save some people or even one person somewhere in the world from infection by so-called zoo malware. So what wrong if an antivirus tries to do its best to protect its users.

Prevention is far better than cure.

got this from the bitdef site

    ISSUE:
The update process fails or the update server is unavailable.

    SOLUTION:
Any of the steps presented below could fix the update issue. Verify the update availability after each step.
Verify if Internet Explorer is set to work online.
    Open Internet Explorer.
    Go to File.
    Uncheck Work offline is set.
    Empty the browser cache.
Delete all temporary BitDefender update files.

For faster updates, BitDefender transfers the updates in an archived format which occasionaly get corrupted during transfer. Delete all files with the extension avxpnd from the location:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Softwin\BitDefender Scan Server\Plugins\
    Change the default update location.

By default, BitDefender will try to update from the address:
    http://upgrade.bitdefender.com
a virtual server which insures load balancing between the following servers:
    http://upgrade1.bitdefender.com
    http://upgrade2.bitdefender.com
    http://upgrade3.bitdefender.com
    http://upgrade4.bitdefender.com

Change the default update location, replacing it with one of the above addresses:
Open BitDefender and go to Live! Update.
    Click on Settings.
Click inside the Update location text box to edit the address.

To benefit of the load balancing system return to the default upgrade address once the issue is corrected.
Configure correctly the update module if a proxy server is necessary.

If the Internet Service Provider (ISP) uses a proxy server, enter its details in the update settings:
    Open BitDefender.
    Click on Live! Update.
    Click on Settings.
Enter the proxy IP address followed by the port used in the text box Proxy sets.
Complete Proxy user and Proxy password.
    Click OK.
Verify the settings of all installed firewalls.

Starting with Windows XP, Microsoft includes a basic firewall in its operating systems which might block incorrectly the antivirus access to the Internet.
Click here to see a list of available update files.

If the list is not shown, contact your ISP for assistance in establishing a connection to our servers.

hope this helps atleast someone ;)
