You get a serial number after purchase. If you dont use it why should it run out?

    Well each company is different.

For example, if you purchase Avast today and then dont install it for let's say six months, you lose out on those six months because the subscription starts from the day of purchase. (Unless this has changed since I last bought Avast).

Avira on the other hand, if you buy a license today, and dont install it for six months, it does not matter. The subscription starts from the day of install.

So that is why a few of us are questioning it. :D

It depends on the *source* of the purchase. When you buy direct from the developer, they give you a license code which starts at purchase (in some situations).

With retailers and resellers, they have to sit on their codes for many weeks or months, so there's no way they can start from issue date. Retailers and resellers are issued with sales codes which turn in to license codes either when registered or activated. So, an avast! code bought from a retailer will not start until it's activated. Same with an AVG code.

The advantage to the customer is that they can buy a retail code and sit on it themselves for weeks or months because, of course, they license won't begin until they activate their code.

With Bitdefender codes, they make it slightly harder to simply buy a new retail code and drop it in to an existing account. The only way around that is to re-install, inserting your new code during installation.

I bought it for only 3.95 GBP at downloadcrew. Dirt cheap.

No, you can buy a new Bitdefender code now and sit on it for a few weeks. The license won't start until you drop your code in to the Bitdefender product, whether that's today, tomorrow, March or in a year.

But, if you already use Bitdefender software and have a Bitdefender account, if you buy a new cheap code (rather than renew), it's not always possible to drop this code in to your existing account.

Only way around that is to drop the code during installation. ie. re-install and insert the code during the installation process.

AFAIK one can contact BitDefender support to "merge" license codes.

Roger that. Guess that is why its happened to me with Avast. Don't recall it ever happening to me with Avira though?

In any event, for $4.95 for one year, well worth it and just purchased.

    Thanks OP and cheers!

Avira codes have a fixed end expiry date. Usually two years from purchase. So, you can sit on your Avira code for a while, but no more than a year or the serial code's fixed expiry will end before the year license.

AVG and Kaspersky codes are the safest for this. You can sit on a *retail* AVG code for years without activating. They are sold as "sales" codes and the license isn't allocated until you register your code with AVG.

Note that AVG codes bought from AVG are license codes and start immediately.

Retail is king (well, for sitting on codes ;)

I would say you got the info straight from the horses mouth, so believe Avira at this point.

I said they have a fixed end expiry date, but I don't know when that is exactly. I was simply highlighting the difference between Avira codes, where they are given a fixed expiry where you have to register your code before it completely expires.

We were always told that it was around two years from purchase (that you had to activate within two years), but perhaps they've extended this expiry date after complaints? Who knows.

The point is, they have an expiry date where they *have* to be activated before they expire and that was the only point :)

Hi everyone, sorry if this has already been answered, but i see these two deals.
    http://store.v3.co.uk/p28006-bitdefender_antivirus_plus_2013_1-pc
    http://store.majorgeeks.com/p28004-bitdefender_antivirus_plus_2013_1-pc
So does the activation start at purchase. I am still using a free Avira IS ( courtesy of some facebook offer )
The price for B.D is ridiculous. I won't need it till September.
I see the download is not the full one ( 2.31 MB ) but you can buy download insurance, quote " Download your software, retrieve your serial code and access your order, for up to two years after purchase."
Also I have heard B.D seriously affects performance, is there any truth in this ? Thats the last thing i want from an AV
    Thank you in advance :)
