    It is just my guess because at one time the log button was not working. After sometime it worked and I saw there was an update around that time. I have to add that I had trouble viewing update logs in BDAV plus too although it was not that frequent :)

    Been using Bitdefender again for about a week after dropping it due to the logs issue back in March. Looks like the logs button actually works now on laptop with Windows 7, windows fire wall, Opera 12.16. Also, the slow surfing is gone - speedy now.

    I've been using the latest 64-bit version of BitDefender Free and have had a decent experience so far the past few days. No issues with Logs button whatsoever on Windows 7. Seems light and quite nice on performance.

    But mostly I've been curious about the settings with the file: bdsrv.xml
    Located: C:\Program Files\Bitdefender\Antivirus Free Edition\settings

    There's lots of interesting settings to enable or disable different features of BitDefender. The folder and files are protected though, so I'm still just trying to figure out how to take ownership of the folder and files within to experiment a bit.

    Contents:
    Code:
    <settings>
      <plugins>
        <plugin name="scansp" dll="scansp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="ScanCache" dll="scansp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="onaccess2" dll="onaccessal.dll" startup="2"/>
        <plugin name="GzQuarAl" dll="scansp.dll" startup="0"/>
    	<plugin name="GzExcludeSP" dll="scansp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="LoadUsage" dll="utilsp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="Update" dll="update.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="Fallback" dll="update.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="ondemandal" dll="ContinuousScan.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="ContScan" dll="ContinuousScan.dll" startup = "0"/>
        <plugin name="hips" dll="mdavc3.dll" startup = "2"/>
        <plugin name="midas3" dll="mdavc3.dll" startup = "2"/>
        <plugin name="httpav" dll="httpav.dll" startup="2"/>
        <plugin name="cloudsp" dll="utilsp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="tracer" dll="utilsp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="utilsp" dll="utilsp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="logger" dll="utilsp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="CommPlg" dll="utilsp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="GzMetricsPlg" dll="utilsp.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="regal" dll="regal.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="BdRescuePlg" dll="ContinuousScan.dll" startup="0"/>
        <plugin name="DummyPlg" dll="Dummy.dll" startup="2"/>
      </plugins>
    </settings>
    "httpav" is obviously the local proxy HTTP scanner. And several others which are quite obvious as well. I apologize if any of this has been discussed here previously.

    I think that's a long shot, but you never know. Seems like it's much more quirky than that. It works fine for some people, it works for a day or two after install, then fails after a reboot for others (including myself), and for some it just doesn't work ever, no matter what. I even know a friend who installed BD Free back last December and has never yet seen the Logs issue at all. Sounds fairly unpredictable to me... :)

    Regarding the editing of settings within the bdsrv.xml file, there is good news and bad news.

    Good News:

    - I was able to disable the loading of "httpav", "hips" and "midas3" and confirmed with Process Explorer.
    - Browsing the Internet was significantly faster.
    - The local Virus Shield still blocked everything including malicious web sites and viruses online, without the need of a local proxy HTTP scanner.
    - I later re-enabled "hips" and "midas3" because I only really wanted to get rid of the HTTP scanning and speed up browsing.
    - I was loving the performance of my netbook and appreciating the great security. This was the perfection that I was looking for.

    Bad News:

    - After every reboot, about 5-10 minutes in, Bitdefender mentions a "Product Update" which requires a reboot and reinstates the bdsrv.xml original file.

    I have always been a very technical person, as is the majority of people here in this forum. We all like settings, settings and more settings. For the most part. I understand Bitdefender making this minimalistic approach to antivirus for the average computer users, nice and simple. But I only wish that there was an Advanced mode to open up and access more settings that could be hidden from those average users. This actually has the potential to be a great antivirus. Fabulous detections and definitely the lightest antivirus from my experience. And using a netbook the majority of the time, I definitely need something light anyways. For me, whether it's a slower netbook or a heavy duty PC, I'm all about performance no matter what. I may just stick it out a few more days testing Bitdefender and just deal with the HTTP scanning for now. And although I'm all for settings and technical stuff, sometimes it is kind of nice to just set it and forget it and not have to worry about anything.

    :cool:

    So is the Logs issue still there for some people? Or does it seem to be fixed? I am sometimes tempted to have another run at it, but then my better judgement takes over and holds me back... Just wondering what the consensus is now...

    I came back to bitdefender because I like it. The logs button did not work for me after the install. But I remember someone in this thread saying to log off and then back on again and it worked! The logs button has worked ever since. Not sure why this works but it did fix the issue on my win7 64 pc. I like the simplicity of this thing. I want to be able to work and play without dealing with configs. I have enough configuration in my life!:argh:

    No issues on win XP SP3 and win 7 SP1. Both 32 bit. Works like a charm.

    BD can have the best detection rates in the world, but if the product doesn't work more than half the time then it's pretty much useless.

    To me Bitdefender engine is without no doubt under the best ones, this explain why lots of third party products use it, and is the reason for me to user Bitdefender Free.

    Unfortunatelly, out of the engine, there are lots of issues, you only need to completely read this thread. My opinion is that they are caused by the GUI being written in .NET, with silly consequences such as the Log button not working for some users.

    I guess it is time to get rid of .NET for the GUI, and write it in C++ as the service and the engine. With that BDFree will be among the best free antivirus: fast, non intrusive, compact, simple, ...

    It's a known issue as well. As far as I know RejZor was able to fix it with a workaround. :D

    Any product that needs "workarounds" all the time is not a product worth using IMO... :)
