The problem I had with BitDefender was its use of AppInit injection for its AV. I don't like AV's that are involved with every process running, or that will run.

I think it adds to system instability.

Did they change that way of operating? I've had nothing but bad luck with AppInit products on any systems here.

The sad part, is everytime theres a new thread about XYZ Antivirus, 2000 people run out and buy the talked about one, and then we have 10 more threads about the AV starting up over the next few weeks.

Why are people so fickle about AV's? I can install a competant AV, be happy, and not really even think about it all daily. While I know people that change AV's almost weekly.

could it be that these defs are just spyware/"misc" malware defs ?

do they have a NOD styled list?

Something is going on, that's for sure. In the past six days, GDATA AVK has increased the signatures of Bdf by around 10,000 (from 135890 to 145873).

maybe BD guys forgot HOW to count?

just a thought... could be some programming error... you know... wrong decimal place styled?

Or maybe they were goofing off the past year, and now that the management is lighting campfires under their b**** seats, they're probably rushing to fill in old and new defs?

I don't know WHAT to believe.

    questions :::::

do these updates hold for BD Free?

does the free version have HIVE ?

Just updated my free version and it says 145873 Known Viruses.

I don't think too much can be read into that (even though they are in the top 5 detection wise) IMO.

I use Safe'n'Sec, which has BitDefender 8.0 On-Demand built in. Today I downloaded a 3MB update to the AV portion of Safe'n'Sec..

Thats amazing! I feel so good having Dr'Web on-access/on-demand, and BitDefender on-demand only (inside Safe'n'Sec). AWESOME combo.

417 more have been added. Total now 146,290. I've been getting updates at least 3 times a day for some time now with the free version.

Me, too. I am an AV junkie. Right now I am eagerly awaiting the on-coming flood of Chinese AV's. Perhaps by the year of the Dog (January 29, 2006). *puppy*

On 23:th March 2005 BitDefender detected 87.6 % against my 3348 "Common PC Protection" of samples (= without riskware). Today on 28:th April 2005 Bitdefender detected 94.1 % against my 3378 "Common PC Protection" of samples.

DrWeb 4.32b with ASpy Beta defs detected today 89.8 % against my 3378 "Common PC Protection" of samples.

Good to see that the flurry of signature updating has apparently had a positive effect, although I note that, unlike KAV, Bdf has had no signature updates with GDATA AVK since Tuesday April 26

BitDefender seems to have much better detection now than about 5 weeks ago. Unfortunately my DrWeb's SpiderGuard wasn't able to load at start up when I had BDF 7.2 free installed in my PC too, so I uninstalled that BDF 7.2 Free.

Just now I have NOD 2.50.7 Beta, AntiVir 6.30 and Vba32 as my backup av:s to DrWeb 4.32b with no problems.

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

Just now finalized my categorizing with NOD because it was now able to delete infected archives, against those 3378 "Common PC Protection" of samples NOD 2.50.7 Beta scored today 87.1 %. So it's about the same level as DrWeb 4.32b, within the error margin, but has clearly better trojan like protection than DrWeb.

The price of NOD licence is still too high for me compared to my DrWeb licence renewal, 16.18 €.

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!
