Other than two a small AOL logos, an optional toolbar during install, and a EULA that says they might spam you (which they don't), there is nothing AOL in AVS. It's KAV 6.0 lite.

also doesnt take a genius to think of the idea of making another e-mail address to use for AOL-AVS and any other potential-spamming things you sign upto ;)

I downloaded the AOL offering to try out, had a read of the EULA, ran a mile.
    Wouldn't touch it.

    Hello,
    Your computer, your choice...
Of course Kaspersky will approve - it's their product under the hood. But anything with the AOL brand on it is tainted.

I like how he writes, because he exposes his opinion. He gives me the chance of disagreeing with him based on what he says.
Avast! is still good for me.
Tarq57 said it nicely. Also don't forget AOL is the "oops" company. Why bother with anything they offer?

Do perform a clean un-install of previous AV, some brands need to use their 'removal tools'.

See my post on page 1 of this thread for a link to "Manual Update"
and warning about possible Free-AV Servers Overload for week after 18 April.

Links for 'Direct from AVIRA' Program Downloads are below in my sig.

WinXP/2k on left and Win98/ME on right.

I realize the OP has already stated they are going to go with Avira, but just in case they still want feedback....

I recently made the switch to AOL-AVS (from Avast) and have been very, very pleased. AVS has detected and deleted several "Bankfraud" trojan emails and just yesterday caught a new one that is circulating around from "Support Team Robot" with a subject line of "Virus Activity Detected". What surprised me the most (in a positive way) was that AVS caught it on my home PC but the same email got through my company's defenses.

Definately AOL AVS. Not a single spam after a couple of months compared to Ashampoo for instance. Detection rates in a first class, actually better than the rest 97 % payable av:s have. What else we need for an av?

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

AOL AVS is only good for one year, so I would say Antivir would be the best choice next for a real free antivirus.:D

I have already 6 AOL lisencies to different email agents (I have cousins too :D ). So, who can say it's not free a year after this?

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

Btw, AVIRA AntiVir Classic doesn't have ad-/spyware protection like AOL AVS has and when we are taking runtimepackers support, there isn't no other av engine even close than Kaspersky. If there is a idiot proof free protection, I think the combo of mine is just now one of them. :D

I don't have any links for proof, but I've read somewhere it's only good for a year. I hope I didn't read it wrong.o_O

If you register with a new key, you can get one year more.

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

Btw. OK, I have other solutions than in my Avatar as McAfee site advisor, Netcraft Toolbar, Firefox 2.0.0.3, RogueRemover, SUPERAntispyware Free, SpywareBlaster, AVZ AntiViral ToolKit, AVG-/F-secure-/Panda-/RootKit Revealer-AntiRootkits too. If something passes through, it's not my fault. It's destiny. :D

My NOD32 subscription will end in one month, and I don't think that I will renew it because I don't feel the need of it, its lack and unfriendly support and because I didn't had any kind of malware since 2000, because of some common sense, except the fact of its excellent speed...

Than, I'm testing a few alternatives...

Currently avast! Home that is working very well here. It's a very nice AV with several layers of protection and with a great support. Its detection is getting better, and all these for free!

AOL AVS, that is a KAV Lite version, have a one of the best detection rate, the features most needed like file and e-mail protection, updates almost every hour, but have the problem to not have the last engine updates and this could not be good because you can have some exploits without a fix...

Will be a difficult choice if I left NOD32... :)

I'm not saying that AVS is that all, that's why my all full combo will pick the rest and full free. That's why I can get other than resident shield results like this.

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!
