I have the latest beta version, - (2013-12-05) Baidu Antivirus 4.2.1.52402, but BAV has been recognised by Microsoft action centre for about 6 weeks now, which included the previous 2 or 3 versions.

The detection rates of Baidu are very good. On average, it will detect more zero-day threats than Avira, Avast or AVG. It's more comparable to Panda or Bitdefender. For these detection levels, and for the light weight and usability of the application, I recommend Baidu as a good, light and effective free AV choice.

Baidu seem keen on growing and improving their product and service. Baidu staff are always offering to help users who come to their forum complaining about viruses that the AV may have missed and they seem to listen to good ideas.

Depending on your needs, you may prefer another AV. For example, Bitdefender Free is the quietest of all, so it's the easiest to use – unless you need to configure it, because the barren interface gives access to very few functions.

About OPSWAT: their Security Score tool won't test the antivirus in your system, it will simply rate the products installed in your computer according to the company's policy, (as in "Symantec is our partner", "Baidu is not", for example), and give an overall rating for your PC.

Baidu is a very good product, but does have an issue which is rather disturbing, that being the Proactive Alerts and how one answers them.

Case in point- the other day I ran a number of malware samples on a BAV protected system. I made the normal setup modifications of enabling Avira as well as checking (Under Proactive Defense) the "Alert More Suspicious Behaviors" box.

As no product is always going to have 100% detection against new malware I was indeed left with a number of files which I ran. Among the Proactive alerts that I received most had the default action of Reject, which is fine. The were a few others where Baidu noted that an auto-start object was being created and the default action here was unfortunately to Allow. Clicking reject would have protected the system (actually the malware would be still left on the system, but would be inert); accepting the default action of Allow resulted in an infected system.

Second issue was when I started Malwarebytes for a quick post boot check. Baidu Proactive popped up an alert that a service was being started with the Default action of Reject, obviously a problem.

Keeping in mind that this was a test and I knew beforehand what was bad and what was good I could answer correctly in all cases and feel smug about it. But what would happen if I presented a few files, some good, some malware, to a third party and "blinded" the test by changing file names? Would that person also answer correctly and feel smug, or would they wind up having an infected system? They would be presented with 2 options, so a 50-50 chance of being correct.

Seems like gambling to me, and gambling should be confined to a Casino and not a computer.

I'm running Baidu along side avast! 8 and do not seem to have any issues. But, I do have the Avira real time engine disabled.

Hey, my Baidu hasn't had a virus definitions update since 12-12. I tried manually running the update function too -- nothing. Am I the only one not getting it?

It's the same for me. Not that's it something that I usually check, I tend to just have Baidu running in the background and never actually open it.

I normally get at least one everyday, for both the Baidu and Avira engines.

That has been the case for me lately too. Not that I check that often, but when I have it has been updating, until a few days ago of course.

    Hi Jaspion,
This lack of updates cannot be explained by not working at weekends, it's been going on for nearly a week now and is ongoing today. I saw the reason given in BAV's forum's. Whoever heard of an AV that doesn't update because it is Saturday - -absolute nonsense. Regardless of which the Avira should still update as they do work weekends.
I have tried it and it doesn't work
I have a dual boot PC and am running BAV on both partitions, one is the latest stable release 4.0.3.49567 and the latest beta on the other 4.2.2. They both say they are up to date but both give different definitions references. o_O?
We seem to have gone back to the bad old days of 3 months ago when the update issue was what was holding this av back.
I believe you recently joined the Admin team at Baidu AV ?? please tell them that this major issue is presently affecting their product and it's reputation as an effective AV.
    Thanks.

PS I have already e mailed them about this problem. They haven't replied which is unusual for them.

Like I said, they don't update on the weekend, and on top of that there's been intermittent problems, not only this week, there are complaints from 6 Dec.

I did join the mod team, trying to help there a little. I just sent them an email too, let's see.

Thanks for e mailing them too Jaspion.
Perhaps their silence is acknowledgement they have a problem and will speak up when it's solved. Although it would be nice to know they are dealing with it.

Got a reply from Baidu this morning re lack of updates.
Although they don't clarify what the problem is, they have paused the Avira updating this week and say it will resume next week. They have also put a notice on their forums.

Ah you beat me by a minute Jaspion.

    It's because I wrote so little! Let's call it a draw! :D

Good news! I'll check if it's updating on one of my machines too and will BRB.

...and no updates for me yet. But they sure seem to be working on it.

My 2 copies of Bav have updated today to the 17th Dec release virus defs version 2111574289, but these are not the Avira defs these are their own defs. Avira has not updated, and remains on ver 7.11.119.18. which was released last Friday the 13th.
Aviras latest defs release is 7.11.120.110.

Had a nasty rootkit slip by Baidu on a clients computer. After it was on for 5 minutes, the screen would flicker twice, BSOD, then restart. The error code kept saying it was a GPU driver problem. Did a scan with TDSS, it found the rootkit, no problems after that.

That is disappointing but it shows the need for a layered approach as nothing is 100% effective.
