Thanks had yes, I had seen that and assumed it works off checksums, but it's far from clear exactly what file types get uploaded, if there are limits on the file size, if the filenames are obfuscated etc.

 

Only suspicious files, and if they have never been seen before.

 

I used to be a very ardent Avira fan. For many years, I've used Avira for myself and used to recommend it to my friends or install it on my friends' computers.
I've noticed one thing:
Avira - up to 2014 version - was absolutely helpless against the Fake-Antiviruses. (MSE also was helpless against those fake AV's.)
The same people with the same browsing habits, stopped getting Fake AVs, as soon as I installed either Bitdefender, AVG, 360 Internet Security, Baidu, even Kingsoft AV on their computers.

Just my observation.

P.S. I don't use and recommend AVIRA anymore, until "a very good and reliable Avira" does something about it.

Rightly so, but still funny in hindsight.

 

All Avira's AV settings were on "All", "Max", etc...

P.S. Should it be automatically checked (from the box) the option Fraudulent software?
Those fake AV's literally "paralyze" the computer, and almost only the Safe Mode can deal with that malware.

 

All AVs have problems with fake AVs, not just Avira.

 

I've noticed that problem only when computers have Avira or MSE AVs installed.

 

If even the APC doesn't help, it can be b/c the cloud can only detect things/improve its detection rate by having stuff uploaded in the first place or users badrep it (which Avira lacks), so it can barely get a chance to get anything when the malware immediately stops Avira from working at all. BTW, I've read that Norton, another AV that has to depend a lot on the cloud, is also supposed to be weak against scare-/ransomware.

PS.

That's an understatement. It was getting worse and worse, so it's safe to say the free version would have barely even passed in December if it was tested.

 

On the other hand, after restarting the infected computer in the Safe Mode, just scan it with MBAM - no cloud - and your problems are over.

No could be about it, as with any other installer except from the Avira website, any other installer can/ and generally does install other **** without prompting

Bet the 2015 version will suck again. It's a shame they always make things hard for themselves with these shady stuff, which is why they'll never be an elite vendor even though they've got more than enough talent and brainpower.

Getting poor test results and being one of the most infection-prone AVs once again. No offense to you, I'm not saying you should dump it if it still works well for you in the future.

When they partner with quite a few questionable companies for quick, easy money, that also means they care less about the quality of their product. It's possible for a company to develop a fine product despite their "quick money schemes", but Avira's quality had dropped since 2010 as they got involved in more and more of them. When they announced that they removed big popups (the smaller ones remained but still), I knew it would get good again. But the new Softonic partnership is a step back.

 

It is the usual well rehearsed melodrama about Avira's secret plot to spy on its customers, if I were you I wouldn't worry too much...
