80%-90% of computer users probably have no idea about antivirus and updates. They probably had the friend, cousin, neighbor, etc... recommend and or install there antivirus for them. They do there banking and shopping online and assume there safe. Free or paid an antivirus should work (ie updates). I like Avira, but there is no excuse for Avira (or any other company) to put users at risk. 2-3 days to fix a problem ok, but an ongoing problem with no solution is unacceptable.

This is the problem. And I'm sorry to come off as this but if you cant figure out how a AV works or how to be "Safe" online then you should not be using those services to begin with. Those are the same type of people that fall for the Hey I live in Australia and you won the lotto here transfer me your bank account and ill deposit money.

If Avira doesn't fix this problem soon they might as well discontinue the free version and do as Eset, Mcafee, Symantec, Trend Micro and most of the others do.

As it stands as I write this, Avast is on the precipice of releasing version 5 free, Microsoft is deep into developing MSE and I have no doubt they will fix the updating bug in their application, Comodo also continues to improve their security suite, and AVGs' free antivirus is the most popular of them all worldwide. Add to that the emergence of Panda, the free AV products from PC Tools and Rising, and it becomes clear that the user has never before had so many good choices.

Whatever any of the above may lack in overall detection and/or removal capabilities, a user can also- for free- add excellent supplemental scanners from Prevx or A-Squared, and also choose from a bevy of free online scanners from the biggies like Kaspersky, Bit Defender, Eset, Trend Micro, F-Secure...; the list goes on and on.

So while I started this thread and do wish Avira would quickly fix the problem, I will not worry about it very much.
In truth, Avira has much more to lose than any of us, because every day Avira screws around with their active and potential users of the free version, they risk irreparable damage to their reputation.
Once they lose a user of the free version, they might never get them back to buy a license for their Premium antivirus or security suite.

OK Avira; ~ Snipped as per TOS ~

Fix it or forget it !

I completely agree. Along with the regular update issue, now when it finally does go through it tells me I have "optimum protection". however, when I check the VDF file it is not the latest one. The avira forum is quickly starting to fill up with this issue as well. I thinks its officially time to ditch:thumbd:

Sign up for their news letter, three choices as to what you want to be sent to you, I get my updates from this source everyday. The server they use is too busy, this way you have new fresh updates.

    Free version:Avira optimizes update system

Painstaking updates will soon be a thing of the past with the free anti-virus solution

Tettnang, 17 November 2009 – Even more performance for free: Avira continues to invest in its internationally popular free version and is now improving its update system. Until recently, users of the free Avira AntiVir Personal virus protection program were occasionally faced with delays when performing updates. Everything is set to change from Thursday onwards, after which date users of the free security software will be able to perform updates conveniently and without disruption, even during peak times. [/I]
The rapid increase in malware in recent years has been reflected in an equally rapid growth in the virus definition files used in the security solutions from Avira. This is one of the reasons why users of the free Avira AntiVir Personal basic protection program have occasionally had to wait some time before receiving their updates. Avira has responded to the feedback from its users with a much-improved update process: Instead of the current four files, in future the virus database will consist of 32 files. This will reduce the size of the individual updatable files, so that in future less data will be delivered in each update. Avira also uses a Content Delivery Network (CDN), which uses numerous servers distributed throughout the Internet to deliver the data more quickly.

The new system requires a one-off update measuring about 25 MB. Users of free Avira AntiVir Personal may once again experience delays as a consequence, after all Avira will need to supply over 100 million users with the update. This means that data measuring over 2.5 Petabytes will be delivered all over the world in the shortest possible time. Users of the commercial antivirus solutions from Avira are not affected by this - they are always serviced by means of a reserved bandwidth and thus receive all updates at any time without hindrance.

I read this from their avira website.
Finally they will fix it and it will work ;) Yes...

Ya, Avira is going to offer since many years, free, one of the best - actually the best probably - antivirus, I think that we must to be thankful and feel confident that it will solve the update problems. :)

Guess that's the advantage I see in having the paid version of Avira I never experienced any of these problems. With the new update upgrade this may relive the pain tho that the free users are experiencing.

After reading post #63 by dews yesterday, I wondered if Avira had already fixed the update problem.

I accessed a download for Avira Personal via filehippo.com, installed, and since yesterday afternoon, it has updated without incident six or seven times (I lost count) on-demand and once via the automatic update function.
These updates have all downloaded and installed quickly.

Well, over the past couple of weeks, I've experienced two instances of the updated starting out fine, then failing from then on.

Since this latest update problem became manifest, this is the first time I have been able to update the application more than once.

Maybe this time, the problem has been effectively addressed.

    If so, thank you, Avira.

Apparently the real deal will become active today, as they will update the base VDF file with around 25MB and distribute that to 110million users.

This file alone will amount to more than 2,5 petabytes of traffic for Avira servers. Given the fact that _worldwide_ internet traffic is around 390 petabytes per day, this is quite a bit for a freebie...

Now give me that new VDF, my co-worker and me killed over 600.000 signatures for it. :)

We remove old signatures when those files are covered by generic detections. Keeps memory profile low. However, that cleanup is currently only possible when all VDF files are updated.

well for now you should use the normal update proces. by only updating the signature files you are not getting product updates and bugfixes and this can cause problems.
the manual update is only for the case you cannot get an update the normal way. but with the recent version 9 you shouldn't have any problems with updating.

Well, there is certainly an improvement on my end! Yesterday the update came down in 10 seconds. Today I updated, and it took only 8 seconds to update  !

    Well done, Avira :thumb: !

And just to clarify, I used to get updates that would take about 30 minutes! I still have one update report showing a time of 47:02 minutes just to update two files!

I got a huge update (suite, trial).

I suppose this doesn't really belong in this thread, but:

(Windows XP Home Edition SP2 IE 7): Today I removed some temporary files, recycle bin etc (but not browsing history), rebooted, and all or many of Avira's services had stopped ! I had to enable them manually.

    This has happened before, infrequently.

Is there anyone who has still update problems with Avira Free or is the problem finally solved? :doubt:
