For me using the paid version :-
Internet Protection - Both Mail Guard Heuristics and Web Guard Heuristics set at high.
Local Protection - Heuristcs set at medium
    All threat categories ticked

    Hi,

The threat category GAME/ is mainly for business use. It does not cover PC games you can buy, but games downloadable from the Internet (casino for example,...). Just take a look at the detection list for "GAME/" and you will see very few detections, mainly for casino games.

In the past, I dump Avira coz of its very high false positives detection...it's too annoying, you know. I become uninterested to it even if it's detection rate is excellent. But hearing this that there latest version has now gives a low false positives then that's a very good news considering that this is one of the highly rated anti-virus program and it has a free version for those who can't afford (really? )...or don't want to spend cold cash for their protection.

I don't play games much so I couldn't tell about it. As for the 'unusual runtime compression' option, Avira flags as suspicious any packed file created with an URC tool. Personally, I never used it so I'm not sure about its practical utility in the real world, but I think that in the very unlikely 'worst case scenario' (URC option off) you encounter one of those critters, the Guard module will take care of the nasties contained within :)

It's been a few days now running high heuristics and I'm not noticing any performance impacts vs. the medium setting. And no FPs either. Sweet! :thumb:

From experience, the categories "Application" and "Programs that violate the private Domain" are the ones to cause most confusion for users, as these cover a lot of dual use tools, like process killers etc.

These are often used by malware, but also be legal software (i.E. some printer vendors like killing processes a lot it seems).

For the record, I have everything on.

Regarding the speed discussion, the heuristic level shouldn't affect speed at all. Basically it's just enabling/disabling some rules, the information gathering is the same at the moment, and that's the speed bottleneck regarding heuristics/generics.

I decided to select unusual runtime compresion as well based on a couple of posts here. No point in selecting games though, that just seems silly.

GAMES/ covers mostly games that companies are not happy to see on their computers, like online poker/casino clients or similar stuff. You know, the cheesy little time-stealers you boss doesn't want you to play. Playing some of them may even be illegal in some countries that have tight regulations on gambling.

Major games like Crysis2, WOW or Rift will certainly not end up on that list as they are mostly not played on company networks by employees that have too much time on their hands... at least we haven't had complaints about these before :ninja:

Besides, most systems are not powerful enough to run anything like Crysis :p
I once tried to run Minecraft on my workstation using Ubuntu bootable with Casper-RW so i could install Java. But then i run up to a graphic card age that just wasn't up to the task and i got bunch of video errors. Oh well, it was a good fine doing it though.

@Rejzor: Not putting in high end GPUs into company PCs does seem to have some protective effect there, i agree ;)

just set Guard, and Web Guard to High, and leave the rest alone ;) you dont need high set on scan, or email.

    Using the following:

    • Guard: Maximum heuristics
    • WebGuard: Maximum heuristics
    • MailGuard: Maximum heuristics
    • Set a password to open "options"

the rest all came from the factory, and everything is so great!
