I actually agree with you. I put it on one of my computers running xp pro sp3 and it seems to be much better than 8.0. it runs faster on a scan, it moves from page to page faster with webshield and link scanner installed (I did not install the toolbar) and i like this identity protection so far.

I also have a liscense for the Pro Antivirus and the Antivirus Pro with firewall and they are doing nicely too.

The free version is also running smoothly on vista home premium sp1 and xp pro sp3.
    they finally got it right!

    Hi Guys :)

    Just To Let You Know...

I started up my desktop computer this morning.. Another Big AVG Update

Just after the computer had started up...
AVG popped up telling me to click OK to Restart .. For an update to take affect.
    I clicked OK .. But it didn't Restart o_O
And the AVG 8.5 icon in my Taskbar .. Had a ! on it :(
In the end.. I just Restarted the computer myself.

Just like last time... The Restart Took Ages!
When the computer finally came back on... AVG 8.5.284

    Hi JRViejo :)

    Thanks! :thumb:

But I actually uninstalled AVG 8.5 from my Desktop Computer yesterday.
    Why?
1/ Coz.. I was absolutely fed up with all the big updates requiring a reboot.
I think it was 3 version number changes in the last 2 weeks.
2/ Yesterday morning I got the dreaded... " Connection to the update server failed "
    To Be Fair..
That could have been caused by the Internet problems I've been having for the last 5 days :doubt:
    Massive DOS Attacks
    Neighbours nicking my channel
And maybe even 1 neighbour trying to hack me
3/ My AVG subscription was almost up anyway.
    So!
I guess I thought... May as well get it over with ;)

    Thanks!

It is funny; AVG has not asked me to reboot after an update in a long time........The recent 8.5.283, 284 and 285 installed seamlessly with no reboots asked whatsoever. :doubt:

Firecat, go to Tools > Advanced settings.. > Update > When to update files section. Is the dot on Complete at next computer restart under Update immediately - If computer start is required:? If so, that's why you are not asked to reboot.

The option you speak of is set to require confirmation from the user in my program; and yet I have never been asked to reboot the computer for an AVG program update at least for the recent 3 updates and everything still works just fine. Maybe Windows Vista has something to do with it?

    Hi Firecat :)

    My computer is - Vista

When I first got AVG almost 12 months ago... Updates never seemed to require a Restart.
    However!
AVG asking me to Restart my computer after a version number update..
Seemed to have become more and more common over the last 3 months :cautious:

See! ... 285 .. Another One Already! ... In just 2 days!

I just got sick of them in the end :thumbd:

    To Be Fair Like!
Everything & Anything ... Seems to constantly want to update these days o_O

Firecat, that's weird, yet, for as long as AVG updates without any problems, consider yourself blessed! :)

Zeena, I rather have a program that's frequently updated to one that is not and I'll tell you why.

Yesterday, I received an unknown email, with an zipped file attachment, similar to others in the past, yet this time, AVG did not flag it. Thinking that it was new virus, I ran the file by Jotti (5/20) and VirusTotal (8/40), and the results showed only minimal detection, plus brand new as of yesterday. I sent it to AVG for analysis.

In less than hour, AVG had issued a Virus DB update and upon scanning, my zipped file was placed in its Virus Vault. The file was infected with the Trojan horse Pakes.CZX. Mind you, I use the Free version and for AVG to react so quickly, IMO they are a winner in my book.

Now, what works for me, might not work for others, and if Avast works better in your 2 systems, then all I can say is: more power to you! :)

    Hi JRViejo :)

I'm certainly not trying to suggest that Avast is better than AVG.
Just That... For Me .. At This Moment In Time .. I'm Happier With Avast ;)

    To be Honest!
I think any security software is only as good as it's last update .. or .. Last Version Release.

    For Instance...
Even though N360 v1 killed my much loved first computer ( XP - Just 12 months old ) :'(
I absolutely loved N360 v1 on my new Vista computer.
Then I made the mistake of upgrading to N360 v2 :thumbd: ... And ... That's when I ended up installing AVG :thumb:
Never liked the trial of NIS 08 that came on my new Vista laptop.
And I absolutely hated NIS 09

I never hated AVG like I hated NIS 09
But I do prefer Avast ... At The Moment!
    However!
    Everything changes over time :)
When Avast Home v5 comes out ... I don't know what it will be like .. I might not like it :doubt:
AVG 9 might come out .. & .. I might think that's the best thing for me :D
    Who Knows!

    That's why It makes me laugh ( I can't understand ) when ...
People get themselves so worked up about which one is the best one
Note : Not talking about you!

I like Avast Home .. For Now! .. That doesn't mean I'll always like it ;)

    I'm Not A Fanboy!
    Couldn't be anyway - Coz... I'm a Girl :D

FYI. Noticed that the AVG Paid Update Downloads page, is now showing the 8.0.285 version, with a March 25th date, possibly meaning that AVG has released it via normal update channels.
