    Hi All
I read somewhere that AVG Antispyware Free is to be discontinued. Is this correct?

If so what free alternative is recommended for on demand use that is at least as good as AVG? I already use SAS free for on demand I want another.

    Thanks

    Terry

    Hi, You could try

Spyware Terminator--free with real time and on demand, or

If you are a die hard fan of AVG AS, please PM me .

I have a paid version key from Ewido era, it may still work. :)

Just spent a few minutes looking at the Grisoft forum, can't find any reference to it being discontinued.
Where did you hear or read that?

Using SAS should have you covered as a scanner. Why not try Comodo BOClean to catch the baddies as they try to open.

Please keep in mind that you get roughly one third of the signatures compared to SD full version that contains 660K+ (not including AV sigs), so in essence it's gimped software. :thumbd:

    Hi All

Thanks to everyone for your replies (Keep em a coming)

I have looked at everyone of your replies and looked at online reviews v each reply. and A squared seems to have a decent following and consistent ratings. So unless there is an earth shattering observation I will probably try it when AVG expires

    Thanks again

    Terry

Very nice scanner. Seems to have a good following, good support. Installed, updated, scanned, no hitches, no conflicts.
    A keeper.
    Thanks.
Terry Wood, I also use A2 (as a demand scanner) without problems. It does have a bit of a rep for FP's. To tell the truth, that's all my other stuff ever finds on this PC these days. Haven't noticed A2 being significantly different in that respect, but then, as said, I never find much. (Which is the way it should be.)

I don't think I will replace my AVG AS when it stops, as I think my SUPERantispyware will be sufficient along with OA, NOD32, SBXIE, SpywareBlaster, and Returnil. I no longer think I need an extra AS on demand in case.

If it is true that AVG AS free version is to be discontinued, I think that either SAS (my preference) or a-squared would be as good.
It is debatable in my mind whether or not such an application is necessary. I don't think so if one has a good AV and especially if a good suite.

In spite of that I continue to use either SAS Pro or AVG AS paid in real time. "Hey, Jerry, why don't you put your money where your mouth is?" I ask myself, but since both are lifetime I continue to use them. If I did not already have those licenses I would probably just use one on demand.

    Regards,
    Jerry

This might be wrong topic (possibly even wrong forum), but I went to check updates a couple of days ago for my AVG anti-rootkit, and found that's now been discontinued as a free stand-alone and will only be available through whichever (probably the anti-spyware) of their paid suites.

    AVG AS standalone.
    Paid or free.
Is set to be discontinued and is no longer available for purchase. :thumbd:

OK That's what I thought. I just did a manual update and it's still hot.

I hope they will continue to update. So far all is well with mine. I do not want to go to the AV or suite. I do have the license to convert my AS to the AV, but prefer to keep KIS.
    Guess only time will tell.

    Best,
    Jerry

This is true and I would add that I received email from PC Tools that said much of what is included in the Starter Edition is "older signatures".

Seams to me that PC Tools free Spyware Doctor is hardly capable of addiquite protection. :thumbd:

I am aware of PC Tools Spyware Doctor Free situation:
I have already wrote about it:
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=202616 (see #10)

Even with less signatures, like the AVG AS FREE,
    PC Tools Spyware Doctor FREE
    has better performance than
Spyware Terminator, Ad-aware Free, and MalwareBytes AntiMalware.
Just infect a PC with some Virtumonde Trojans and scan it with the above.
PC Tools Spyware Doctor FREE found more than what
Spyware Terminator, Ad-aware, and MalwareBytes AntiMalware
managed to find in my PC.

    (2) For Spyware Terminator and MalwareBytes AntiMalware,
    let's not forger Aigle's test:
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=198080
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-SAS free and Spybot Search & Destroy remain the best FREE AS.
-AVG AS Free, a-Squared Free, and PC Tools Spyware Doctor Free follow.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Clarification:
I have no Official or Unofficial relationship with PC Tools or any other AS vendor!

    Conclusion:
    - SpyBot Search & Destroy remain sucky, along with Ad-Aware. (compared to other antispyware software)

    ;)

SpyBot Search & Destroy is an underestimated Free product.
The Combination of the new SpywareBlaster 4.0
    and SpyBot Search & Destroy
-when they don't conflict with the rest setup of a user-
offers a FREE -but Reliable- solution.
I prefer the above Combination over
    Spyware Terminator,
    Malwarebytes AntiMalware, and
    Ad-aware 2007 Free.

    Hi,

A true confession and late-coming revelation from PC tools, then IMO, that said email IS the final nail spiked on Spyware Doctor free version's coffin.

May God bless its soul. Amen.
P.S After AVG 8 is in its full swing, AVG AS free could be the next victim.
