It's not bad, though update check only once per day sucks real hard these days even for free product. avast! is free and it checks every 4! hours for new updates. Everything else is very acceptable. Especially final inclusion of ad/spyware detection. So overall it's quiet nice product.

Yes I agree, there may be mutliple updates per day but even the free avira only checks every 24 hrs and your correct avast has the best update even better them some paid for products.

I really don't see what's the point of avast! checking for updates every 4 hours when Alwil only updates once every 1, 2 days, and often not at all during weekends. Grisoft also updates approximately once per day, so one check per 24hrs is all that's needed.

It's just a mindset, people. With Grisoft's new release, Alwil has some catching up to do IMO.

It's the mind set that you do not understand. Obviously. And alwil certanly doesn't update definitions only once per day or every 2 days. There have been several times where they updated even 5 times a day.

Now to the one day check explanation and why it's a very bad thing.
Grisoft releases signature update at 14:00. Your AVG is set to check for updates at 12:00. So you actually missed the update because you checked for it too soon. Next update check will be after 24 hours. 24 hours !!! Considering todays trends, this is just extremelly looooooooong time. There can be 30 updates that day but if you missed the check timeframe you'll miss them all. Avast on the other hand in the same scenario will only need next 4 hours and you'll get the new update. And if they release another one in the same day you'll get that too in maximum 4 hours delay. See the difference?

Alwil to do some catching up? On what exactly? Even though i like AVG 8, Grisoft has plenty of catching up to do before they can "catch" avast!.
It's been like this and will continue this way. But they closed the gap significantly with certain additional features in free version 8...

Free AV's check for updates every 24 hrs. with the exception of Avast.
Manual updates can be done anytime.
I don't see it as that big of a deal or trouble to click on the update button.
We're talking seconds or a couple of minutes if there is an update.
    No biggie.
If that's unacceptable then buy the paid version and it will check every hour for updates.
The free version is a nice gesture by these companies.
It will never have all the amenities the paid version has.
I think AVG's free version offers alot but sorry folks, the options cost extra.

I also agree with your point of view or as you say mindset,If one does not soley use AV as there only defense, then checking for updates once per day should be fine. But from prior experience avast has updated itself more then once a day and added to the VDB,needless to say no longer use it so couldn't say how often it updates.

Let's stay on the topic "AVG 8 Free Launches" and leave comparisons out of the thread.

I newer was a fan of AVG products, but this looks god i will certainly test it.I'm mostly interrested in Ram usage. And 1 question sry if it doesn't sound right :the resident shield of the free version catches the same threats as the one in the paid version(Supposing the last one uses only the av & antispyware module)??.From the table comparrison it looks like it does.If someone can clarify .Thanks

I'm liking this more and more. AVG has evolved into an absolute beast when it comes to detection, far from its humble roots since the '90s, and with added ad/spyware detection it's surpassed avast!'s only advantage in the free AV field. Experiences with the viruslab staff have so far been positive. Plays nice with a limited user account. The included LinkScanner Free is a nice touch, and updates are fast and smooth (unlike Avira). I'm switching to this as THE recommended free AV from now on. :thumb:

I choose not to install tool bar so far runs great. The scanner has three settings slow-auto and quick scan, the first manual scan set to scan entire computer on Auto took nearly 1 hr to complete on a 250 Gig HDD a little on the slow side, but no biggie though.

Here is a suggestion on how to install the Free or even the Pro.
I just installed the free on 5 computers this way and it is running beautifully.

Go into Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall AVG 7.5
You will need to restart your computer.
If you have AVG antispyware 7.5 you will need to back and uninstall this program
If you have Maccafee Site Advisor you will need to also uninstall this program too.

    1. Pick up AVG free 8.0 here:
    http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

    2. Make sure you look on the left side and make sure you only download the free version.

    3. Save the program in your “Downloads” Folder.

    4. Once it is saved close the Browser.

    5. Navigate to the Download Folder and double click the program.
Give it a few seconds to start. You might see it on the task bar so just click on it to open.

    6. You will see “Welcome to AVG Free Setup” Click Next.

    7. “Acceptance Notice”- Click Next

    8. “Accept Again”- Click Next

    9. “Checking System Status”- Now wait – you will see a blue bar go across the screen. Once done- Click Next

    10. “Select Installation Type” Click Custom then Next

    11. “User Name and License” -leave what is there

    13. “Destination Folder”- do not change anything

    14. “Module Selection”- Put Check Mark:
    AVG Free for Windows
    Email Scanner
Plug in for MS Office 2000/xp/2003/2007

    15. “Email Scanning” Check- Personal Email Scanner Only

    16. “AVG Tool Bar”- UNCHECK- Yes I would like to install AVG Security Center Toolbar. (I still do not like the way it works)
    11. Click Finish
    12. Now you will see it install. Give it a bit of time.
    13. When finished it will say “Installation Complete.

    14. Once it is complete, it will close then re open.
    15. Click NEXT
    16. It will come to the Updates Box:
Updates- Once a Day should be checked
Scans- pick a time to scan- you will change this later
    Once Done- Click Next
    17. You can check the Privacy or not, this is your choice
    18. Click Next to get Updates- you will see a green bar go across to get the updates. Once Done click Next
    19. You can Register or not- your choice
    20. Click Finish.

    Then do a full scan

Reinstall the software but use "repair" and uncheck the toolbar. It is the only thing I do not like on AVG.

As AVG still only automatically updates once a day (AFAIK) I'd say there are still certain downsides when compared ~Rest of comment edited. - Ron~

What's the purpose of the LinkScanner feature... a sort of 'web scan'? also, does avg still uses its four-colored square icon for the systray?
