I wanted to know how frequently and large avast! updates were so I decided to keep track for a 38 day period and I just thought I would share my results since I've seen the same question asked here a few times. I've attached a sample of the file and a download link if you would like to see it in full. Enjoy...

    Full file: http://tmcb.nfshost.com/avastupdates.pdf

Just keep in mind that this is in no way an expert report. ;)

    Interesting.

Just wanted to add that what you're counting is not quite the "number of defs" -but a number of new "virus names". In avast, we often share names (i.e. call multiple [usually related] malware samples by the same name). And ultimately, there's the *-Gen detections - which we currently use to detect 500,000+ malware pieces - but they all share just a couple of "names"...

BTW I'd say it would also be useful to measure the size of the update (in terms of bandwidth use). You can parse this info out of the <avast>\setup\summary.txt file.

    Cheers
    Vlk
