How can you permanently turn off the Software Updater in Avast 8 Free? It seems like every time I disable it, it starts again with each Windows startup or reboot.

You are not alone in asking this question. This option has been added in the most recent beta. There is no indication when there will be a new release.

For now, the only way to really keep it from coming back on is to uninstall this feature in control panel -> programs and features or add/remove programs.

Or, wait for a new program update.

    Software Updater in Avast

By chance, is there a specific exe file that controls just the Software Updater in Avast 8?

Are you trying to turn it off? If so, just go into Settings-Software Update and un-check the box. It's not very useful in my opinion. I don't know of any specific .exe file.

That's exactly what I'm trying to do. However, doing what you suggested only turns it off for the current session. Once you reboot, it's back in full force.

Hmm, I don't see another area in which to shut it off, unless you want to go through the hassle of Uninstall-Repair option. That may do it since I believe you can still uninstall specific services from that. I think if you choose to not use something it should just deal with being disabled and leave you be. I don't know, maybe someone else has a better answer.

imo just do a repair install and uncheck it next time it only takes a minute and you dont loose any settings or info that way.

Are you sure it's even an install option? I don't recall seeing it the first time around.

TomAZ, the bug with the not fully functioning ON/OFF checkbox should have been fixed now (in the latest avast version). Are you saying it's still not working for you?

    Thanks

The inability to turn it off permanently was present in the original release (8.0.1482/3). In the latest release (8.0.1489) it works.

Yes, it's possible to not install the module - as well as uninstall it from the Control Panel.

And no, there is no standalone executable.
