It does work, but it's unchecked by default as it caused constant high CPU usage because of the way uTorrent manages it's downloads. For example, if you import a torrent file into your client leading to a 1GB download, the torrent client creates a 1GB file into your download folder and as all the pieces are downloaded they are put in that file until it is complete. uTorrent doesn't begin with a 1GB file but very small and it gets larger everytime a new piece is added and that way it gets rescanned continuously by Avast the whole time.

1.8 GHz Celeron Single Core, 160 GB Toshiba 5400 RPM SATA drive, Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, running avast! (file, web, network on default) does not slow this dinasour down.

I just turned those off. You'll have to also uncheck them in Settings, or your Avast! icon will have an exclamation point forever. ;)

+1 The Shields are the best balance between protection and performance.

    Right and wrong.
If the webmail comes from https, it can't be scanned by any antivirus as the traffic is encrypted. Local unencryption must be done before scanning and releasing it to email program.

In whatever capacity, the only thing scanning web based traffic, be it email or anything else, is done by Web shield in avast!. Mail shield plays no role in it if the user has not configured an email client. On the other hand, if user's mail client fetches email using the http protocol, and not POP/IMAP, it will still be scanned by web shield and not mail shield.

Right. But Mail Shield plays the role on scanning outbound unsolicited email (spammer infection).

Depends on how much disk space you need/want.
