    Hi Beefcarver,

try to terminate the "Internet Mail" provider.

Double in tray icon, choose the "Internet Mail" provider and click "Terminate".

    or

Right click in tray icon, and choose Stop > Internet Mail.

    Regards

You need to run the "Mail Protection Wizard" from the avast group in Start menu and remove the auto-protection from the accounts.

    Thanks Vlk

This is normal because you're using Win9x.
avast! doesn't change these settings under WinNT because it's using different scanning method for emails.
Is email server connection SSL/TLS enabled or not?

It might be more handy you ask this question in the Avast! forum, otherwise vlk has to check all the forums so much :p :D
