Lot of hot air over nothing.

I have seen machines running other security progs and be infected.

Yet to see a machine in the real world get infected which is running WSA.

I could say the same about any computer with no AV that does not look at pornography and or warez/hacks/free-ware-games.

I could honestly say that you have a 98% detection rate No-AV AV by just not visiting pornography websites. Most infections come from that side of the internet and the reason why so many people obsess over security. Don't wanna visit one of those sites and then look at your bank statement on the same computer without "feeling" protected. :shifty:

There is some truth in what you say and for a long time it was considered that you only got infected by going over to the "dark side". However, legitimate websites can get compromised as we have seen in recent times. So one does need to be vigilant and this is where layered protection helps.

Actually majority of mass infections nowadays originate from trusted websites been compromished (directly or indirectly --> banners/ads). The approach "I only visit normal/trusted site, so I am fine" may have worked few years ago, not now unfortunately. :)

Well tests (of the reputable organisations) are interesting and useful to have, but at the end of the day one must base one's opinions on personal insights, as each computer set-up, configuration, installed software, and surfing habit is inevitably unique.
So I base my true assessment on personal findings. On this machine I've run WSA-E for about 5 months, as a standalone, with only Windows Defender in tandem realtime, and using Privatefirewall also, with UAC at max setting.

I run a deep scan (approx 60 seconds) after each browsing session, and the figure below comprises ime about 15-20% right-click scans, but is what I really look to on which to base my trust/valuation of SecureAnywhere. And I had a couple of FPs also in that 5 months, nothing more. WSA (not forgetting their matchless support) truly rocks...bigtime!! ;) :thumb:

I think now I'll not bother too much to run that many scans...there's obviously no need:)

p.s I've also checked (via on-demand scans) with MBAM, HitmanPro, and EAM free version....nothing ever found :)

i'm still wondering why people still follow blindly test labs results....wje just see the top of the iceberg (means the results) the rest is behind a curtain.

I tested WSA vs lot of malwares, sure after the on-demand scan (real-time disabled) its detection was very average but when i tried to execute those malwares, they were often blocked or at least ask my decision.

i prefer a soft preventing malwares to sit on my system than others than just detect it after they were on my system.

Alright, so the mass infections are on normal websites. If you have any AV when you go on a website that is mass infected then either you AV does not have a signature or one will come about very soon as its such a high profile "mass" infection.

I am talking about the infections that only hit about 100 or so people or less, the ones that "DO" come from the dark side. I can say for sure that for every "mass" infection on a normal public website that their will be 1000 or more small infections on adult content websites and those "small" infections are the ones that are dangerous because they are the ones that are out to get your personal information and credit card details, you are always more at risk when a file is only sent to a few as their is less chance for a signature release and it will see on your computer for months. Mass infection? you will have a signature within 24 hours by 80% of vendors.

Uuuhm, unfortunately is not as simple as you describe it. These mass infections are designed to hide as much as possible and "morph" dynamically (once infected clients may be updated to the latest malware to evade detection). They are also of a financial nature as the driver for most of the infections nowadays is $$$. You have of course smaller size infections too, by the way, also targeting normal web sites. As well as phishing and and social engineering. Porn and the rest still play a role but minor.

It would be really nice if it was so easy to get protected by not going surfing on porn sites, it is not the case anymore and for malware writers actually not as profitable than compromising vulnerable trusted web servers (or third party supplier of content) to deliver malicious payload to a much wider audience (= much more $$$ involved) :)

It was discussed here (wilders) sometime ago and statistic also confirms the trend.

Except once it's on the PC, the malware will likely have hidden itself and stay up to date via a C&C server. I can't think of a single time when an AV alone was sufficient to clean a computer once infected - although admittedly I can't comment on WSA's transparent sandboxing.

Fax is correct that merely sticking to trusted websites isn't enough any more, and we all know that AVs aren't infallible or foolproof.

Saying that, most people who keep software up to date, have minimal plugins, and stay behind a default deny hardware firewall of some sort ought to be safe enough. Outside of URL/IP/Ad blockers, my security setups never get challenged.

I'm just saying, staying away from those bad websites will give you a good advantage anyway. I am saying that you are more likely to get infected while browsing a few hours of pornography a day "with" an antivirus, then you would going to facebook, youtube and news websites without one.

And fax was just pointing out that the game has changed since that was the most useful thing to know about being safe online.

Relying on the security of others is risky - you don't know how well that local forum you frequent is going to secure itself, or how up-to-date that solicitor's server software is. Heck, even government webpages have been hacked and have served malware.

The 'bad guys' set up machines to continually scanning websites for known vulnerabilities - and when found, automatically add scripts to the HTML of the site so as to exploit the computers of people who visit the page e.g. Blackhole exploit kit.

Actually thats not entirely true about porn sites a lot of the paid membership ones believe it or not are safe most of the time.

Your more likely to get infected from email attachment or openning a jessica alba picture then a legit adult site or pehaps a popup on facebook.

I know people that use paid service's and never had infections from them, legit ones anyways. If you can call them legit because IMO there all sleezy.

This has gotten a bit offtopic with an argument that only really has one truth imo...

You can ALWAYS be infected. ALWAYS. My cousin was a very proficient, security-conscious surfer. He literally ONLY went to the same handful of totally legit sites every day. Not an explorer. He had a mentality of "I will only use Sandboxie when I know I'm going somewhere I don't normally go."

    Bad idea. :thumbd:

He got his computer hosed with malware and rootkits two separate times.

Never, NEVER assume you are safe based on how you browse.

Everyone here who knows the way I post probably know I'm very much pro-user education...but I'm also pro-truth...and the sad truth is no amount of user education can stop malware. No one is immune to social engineering, and even worse, no one is immune to visiting everyday legitimate websites that become hijacked.

Those folks that say "the best security is not clicking on things you don't know" or stuff like "I never get infected because I'm careful"...sorry, no. You need actual security mechanisms COMBINED with strong user education to be truly safe on the web these days! :)

I fell into the trap years ago when i joined in 2008, always wanting the best security, installing and uninstalling every time something new and "better" came out. I have wasted so many hours on it when in reality since then i have maybe seen 5 real threats on my machines, and this is all the while browsing without care and downloading / going wherever i fancy. One of my hobbies in finding interesting software and new tech and even then im not getting infected. I am just saying, don;t waste your life, a good antivirus and maybe a sandbox if your paranoid will do..... you are not a CIA agent, nobody cares who you, me and anyone else is and people who fall for social engineering are quite stupid, considering i have spent years researching human behavioral programming and linguistics i have noticed one trend, people are not conscious and will do what their primate brain wants regardless of logic. :thumb:

Security, sex, food. Wilders is the place for those who's primate brain is stuck on security. :)

I had faith in the whole Webroot Team especially Joe. We were promised WSA would be the best and improve enormously. I guess we just have to have faith in them for a bit longer.:)

And why would comment about kaspersky here as it's the Prevx (WSA) Forum? Your sounding like a Troll but fax gives a great reply in another thread! https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=332539

Stop relying on antiquated tests and start relying on your own experience with WSA.
