    Hi Atomas31,

I am from PC Tools, maker of Spyware Doctor.

The log you have provided indicate to us that these are legitimate threat detections, thus NOT false positives.

We do however take false positives very seriously.

Should you have any futher enquiries, you can contact us directly at PC Tools:

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Hi Pc Tools,

Are you kidding me or what?

First, I never had Winfixer, hotbar or backdoor.rbot.gen install on my system with or without my knowledge...

Second, none of the following scanner detect anything close to what SD found : Kaspersky pro (with extended database), NOD32, Bitdefender, The Cleaner, Trojan Hunter, Ewido, a-squared, Ad-aware, spybot search and destroy, bazooka, unhackme, boclean, zerospyware 2005, MSAS, Counterspy, spysweeper, pest patrol, spycop, TDS-3, sentinel and Jotties scan... And you want me to believe that Spyware doctor found all those nasties on my systemo_O?

I hope you will check again because it seems more easy for you to say that they are legit then actually solved the problem...

    Best regards,
    Atomas31

Would you guys mind quarantining the threat using SD if you have not done so already and see if it breaks any applications.

Also I do not understand Atomas when you say:
"First, I never had Winfixer, hotbar or backdoor.rbot.gen install on my system with or without my knowledge..." How can you be sure it was not installed without your knowledge? I mean if you are sure that you can not be infected why do you use an anti-spyware app? This confuses me. So if you could explain it would help me understand it better. Also if you both could explain why you think this is not actual malware I would like to hear that as well. I mean if your AV detected something as a virus and you submitted it to them because you thought it was a false positive and they came back and said it was an actual threat would you still say you don't think it is? I mean yes it is possible it might be by a remote chance a false positive but this leads me back to the question as to why you use anti spyware software if you doubt the results this much?

I do not work for or represent PCTools but I do try to help them when I can and this would be of help to them.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Like I already PM you, the reason I know are the following : I am the only user of this computer. I have a lot of real protection against the majority of nasties that will have react if I ever had one of those nasties. I scan every files or programs before opening them. And I also frequently scan my system with a multitude of reputed and legit software (anti-spyware, anti-trojan and anti-spyware, check my list a few post before this one). Even my HJT is clean!

Also, I have no problem with my system that could indicate to me that have some nasty on.

As for the result of reporting, I have to say that I have use the malware detective tools in SD to send them a complete report of my system and my log joint and NEVER, NEVER received a confirmation from them that the finding in my log where legit nasties... So when PCTools indicate to me that just by the look of my log they can see that they are truly nasties, I wonder : What about the malware detective report that I send (and I send a few in the last weeks)? Does this report serve no purpose at all, if they "can see" only by my log that my system is not clean (from their point of view) what's the point of sending them a malware detective report?

By the way, I use a lot of Anti-spyware to have a good idea if what one found could be or not a legit nasty, than if only one like spyware doctor is founding 417 nasties, I scan with everything I have, if they are files I also scan it with jottis' scan and virus total if the result are negative than I check my hijack this, if that's negative than I make some research on the internet and if this is also to appear negative or ambigu than I can place what the anti-spyware has found on forums to see if other people more qualified (and not a representative of the company that simply said that by the indication on my log that they look like true nasty) than me can confirm or not that they are truly nasties if not than I begin to seriously doubt of what that anti-spyware has found...

Hope that helps you to understand why I doubt about what PCtools indicated to me...

    Best regards,
    Atomas31

I'll try quarantining and post if anything breaks. From reading up on SVKP.sys it seems that, although it is safe for copy protection purposes, it can be misused by others. So if I read that right SD is correct for highlighting it as a possible threat but I would not be certain that it is one that should be removed (as high risk).

OK that sounds logical but I also forwarded the file that you sent that SD pointed as winfixer. Maybe this was looked at as well although not indicated in their post. Since I am not PCTools maybe the easy way to help resolve this would be to let SD quarantine the possible infection and see what happens. Restart and see again what happens. Does it break any of your apps. Do you receive any error messages? This would be easy, helpful and may pinpoint something else which may prove you correct.

    Thanks,

    Chris

Has anything been affected since you quarantined the items SD suggested were infections?

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

I didn't quarantine anything since it appears they are false positives!

Since the update of yesterday, SD have resolved the hotbar false positives... but don't know when they will resolved the other ones?

    Best regards,
    Atomas31

Yes but even if as you say they are false positives if you quarantined them it might break an application and then reveal which app may be generating these false positives. I'm glad they fixed hotbar and I will ask why they insisted it was not and now possibly changed them. It does not make users feel good when this happens. From my dealings with PCTools they really do care about the user and getting issues fixed ASAP. Even If they were/are wrong on these, yea it's upsetting but we all make mistakes. I'll try to get some info and let you know what happened.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

I don't know for you but personnally I don't really like to quarantine things when it might break a legit application... Even more, those false positives are not new with SD, they appears at least once before in the last year and at that time I did quarantine them! results : I screw my system and had to put back an image of my system... Thanks to SD!!!!

Personnally, I really like SD but major false positives seems to frequently happens with them after an upgrade of the software or when they are throwing a lot of new definitions at a time. Looks like they are so angry to increase their database that they don't properly test the new definitions before their release them...

As for reporting false positive, as I am concerned, it has proof to be a very, very painfull and frustrating experience and that each and every time that happens... Do you think that at some point they will ease the way to report false positive to real professionnel who will do their job and fixed issue ASAPo_O?

    Best regards,
    Atomas31

I'm going to addrress all your concerns with them and hopefully you will have an answer to some of these questions soon . As far as quarantining possible false positives not just with SD but with any type of program of this nature it sometimes helps to get an issue resolved quickly. Especially those who have drive imaging software like TI or even First Defense. Stay tuned.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Just to let you know that with today update the Backdoor.rbot.gen false positive has been resolved.

Now, there is only the winfixer false positive to still fix, at least they didn't proof me that it wasn't a false positives and found no info (with google) proofing that the file they tag has being winfixer is actually a file associate with winfixer?

In any case, I have no congratulation to tell to "PCTools" since if I were a newbie and simply remove those false positives (like he suggest) I might have screw my system... thanks' PCTools that is very professionnal from your compagny and proof out of a doubt how seriously your compagny take false positives...

    Best regards,
    Atomas31
