Perhaps it was scheduled system scans which I believe still reqires the task scheduler?

My comp updates all by itself and I have one scheduled update set per day just in case and it updates even if I am logged off all accounts.
Now I have noticed that on my non admin account sometimes does not auto update on log in, but on the admin account, it updates automatically and you have to allow UDP (in-out) on port 2000, (do not remember ip address) in your firewall.
There is a post in a thread from Mariusz somewhere on this subject.

    I get updates for ArcaVir.
I manually run the Update Module from the tray icon.

ok..Ive just reinstalled arcavir.Ive performed a manual update.Rebooted and lo and behold the windows task scheduler is in the system tray with an "arca update" entry at 21.16 everyday starting 05/04/05.Also when i click open arcavir "run update module" , and click "tasks" tab , the entrys in there. This is really get annoying.
Arcavir IS using the windows scheduling agent (mstask.exe) at least on my computer it is....its now in the machine run services list...

Maybe it is a WIN98 thing. I have XP or maybe Mariusz can shed some light on your issue. http://www.stormbyte.com/forums/

I checked my task schedular and there are no entries.

Thanks for the link.I will post there.I just disabled the task scheduler, and deleted the machine run entry for mtask.exe.The update task is still showing in update module on task tab. However the scheduler is no longer starting with windows (machine run entry) or showing on the sytem tray , so im not sure whther it will update. Its due to update tomorrow so ill check it then.Could you confirm what is supposed to be running at windows startup?.I currently have..
    1.abnetmon (netmonsv.exe)
    2.abmenu (abmenu.exe)
    3.avmon (avmon.exe)
    4.abregmon (abregmon.exe)
    5.netmonsvstat (netsvst.exe)
Are these the "normal" modules that run on boot up?.

Your start up entries look good. Check your firewall log and see if you are logging "arcavir tray UDP out & in, ip 80.72.33.242 on port 2000" about every hour.
If you are arcavir should update itself.

ArcaVir updater was updated recently. Try installing ArcaVir, then update to latest version and see if it still uses the task scheduler.

    Regards,
    Firecat :)

With all this talk of ArcaVir I thought it worth giving it a try.

First impression is that it is still a bit rough around the edges.

I downloaded it yesterday and that version still used windows (2K) scheduler.

It did not find the IE exploits that BitDefender found and like B/D it slowed the system down too much.

The other annoyance is when left to scan it will stop at any file it cannot open, so if you leave it to its own devices when you return you will find it has stopped waiting for you to press OK.

For now I have removed it.

No I am not. It is just that BitDefender found them in a newsgroup archive I have and could not delete, move or copy them to quarantine. Don't use IE and is blocked from connecting so probably not an issue. They were also found by online scanning Dr Web & Kapersky.

This is one thing I dislike about ArcaVir also, But I just set action to Quarantine and it solved the problem.

I use Extendia AVK (single engine) for scheduled system scans.

ArcaVir will not do a scheduled scan if not logged to acount, I log off all accounts when not using comp and AVK will scan as scheduled regardless. Does not need windows scheduler as ArcaVir does.

This leads to my next complaint, AVK creates a temp file that ArcaVir cannot open and it gives a false positive virus detection of this file. Sometimes the RTM finds this and sometimes it is not flagged until I run a quick system scan (ArcaVir is set to not scan archives and only takes about 14 minutes to do a full system scan). I use this to scan between scheduled system scans with AVK.

Anyway, it is still my main AV and I believe it will get much better.

That did occur to me but did not try that.
I am sure it get better and will keep it in mind for the future.

  15. I'd recommend you try this:

    1)Start ArcaVir On-Demand Scanner
    2)Go to its options
3)Click on 'ArcaVir Scanner' (Dont expand it)
4)Uncheck the box 'show information about scanning errors'

I have it unchecked and dont get any alerts when Arca is unable to scan any file.

Ok I finally got around to installing this on a VPC and trying to run a scan against some samples, and immediately I was dissapointed, "single license doesn't allow to scan network drives: E:\"
So since this is the case, "testing" it will be even farther off since I don't normally change my main AV's that much. How dissapointing.
BTW, the task sched is really annoying.

Our regular ArcaVir contributors here at Wilders are disappointed too with the recent Sober update issues and lack of support from Stormbyte. It has gone quiet all of a sudden... :(

Oh I have my share of problems with it.....:D

But I'm sure it will be fixed, either by wiping my hard disk or otherwise :D

    But I'm glad I made the better decision - NOD32 :)

Just curious if any of the ArcaVir users here tried to contact Mariusz directly through email or phone...

    Phone? :eek::eek::eek:

I did contact Mariusz through email - no reply, but that was only once, back in early April. Now, ArcaBit provides support....OK, not really good, but not bad either.
