AOL has been quiet here for the past couple of months as far as the constant scanning and connection attempts go. Hopefully, that will be the one thing that doesn't change.

I have written more cease and desist letters to AOL in the 192.x.x.x range I could probably fill a small book.

AVS was a good a/v while it lasted on my pc, 11 mos., saved my bacon once, non f/p, and luckily I received no spam from them. Shame is, it was the only good thing that I found from aol....

Not sure if this counts, but I attended a tech fair many years ago and AOL had a booth display and were passing out metal square badge clips that displayed the company logo on it. There was a small battery attached to the back of the clip which powered a very small red light bulb that flashes in the center of the "O" letter in AOL. When you "clicked" on the lever in the back of the metal badge, it would turn the light off and on. So you could wear a badge with a flashing red light on it. However, if you come across anyone who suffers from epilepsy, I am not sure you would want to be wearing it and turning it on. :D  :gack:

I assumed that since we were talking about a free antivirus, and you can request and unlimited about of free keys, that it would not be a problem posting some of those free keys for those that needed one. Evidentially that is not the case.

Nice gesture on your part, EliteKiller, offering those AVS serials for others to use. I find nothing unusual about it. You were just trying to be helpful, that's all. After all, Active Virus Shield is still the best free antivirus out there, at least IMHO. It's very configurable and it has Kaspersky under the hood...:).

Sorry, but this ain't totally correct @Trespasser

AVS has only the core of Kaspersky AV 6 without the enhanced database and heuristics...

Avira Free lacks POP mail scanning and Spyware database, though it's more thorough because of it's heuristic abilities. And, would you really trust freeware by AOL, that's been given out even to non-customers?

    Don't remember?

    You still trust them?

Do I trust AOL? No. But from what I gathered from those two links the problem was with people who used AOL's search function on their web site. That does not mean AVS is being used to collect info on the user. Also, I've never noticed any unusual internet activity while using it.

I'm also aware that AVS is only using the Kaspersky engine (I never implied anything to the contrary). BTW, could you supply a link to support your statement that the Kaspersky engine, used by AVS, does not have heuristics built in? Sounds like an assumption to me. If I recall correctly (and I could be wrong) version 6 didn't even have a setting for heuristics.

I've used AntiVir Classic a lot here recently, and it is a great antivirus, but just yesterday I had 3 updates of over 9000 kbs in size each. Luckily, I'm on DSL 3.0 so it's not too much of a problem (more of an annoyance) but I don't see how people on dial-up stand it. Avira needs to implement small incremental updates.

I updated a PC with a 10MB update after having done no updates in over a month just the other day. This was on dial-up so it took a while. I hope that the downloads don't end up being several GB in size in the future. :thumbd: :gack:

I did an update today for AntiVir Classic, after doing a Complete PC restore in Vista, (the virus def was 3 days old) and I was greeted with a 34-35000 kbs download. Fantastic. :'( .

BTW, everyone, Kav 6 does not have a setting for heuristics. Don should be able to explain whether AVS has heuristics or not.

KAV 6.0 & AOL AVS have a setting to enable additional "riskware" detections.
