That has nothing to do with that. That was mainly because Kaspersky doesn't support multithread scanning.

I wonder if it had something to do with the Kasperky/chkdisk issue?

Or it simply had something to do with being able to offer a much better deal.....to AOL.

    LMAO. :D

If you rely on a cell phone only and your service goes down or you cannot reach a transmitter, you are **** out of luck. ;)

If AOL is going to flip flop between different AV programs, that would create an install/uninstall nightmare for all of its users. Another way to potentially damage user's computers. :thumbd:

I tried the AOL McAfee Security Suite today and it wasn't half bad. Fairly light according to Task Manager, updates fine (though there's no adjusting the frequency), has the 5100 eng, the firewall was slightly adjustable, didn't seem to slowdown my internet connection. Like I said, not bad.

The only fault I had with it was that it didn't scan zip/rar files just after you download them (just like AOL Active Virus Shield). But it did pick up the eicar test file once I opened the zip.

    Later.

While I think it is a step down, a lot of folks run McAfee with good results. If I wanted such an application I would not hesitate to use the Mc version.

I almost downloaded it just to have it in case, but did not want to give AOL all the information they wanted, like my phone number, when I did not really plan to use it.

Overall, I would rather have Avast Home, but McAfee is not bad.

    Regards,
    Jerry

I de-activated AVS->dLo'd eicar(didn't open)->re-activated AVS. I checked AVS the next day and eicar was quarantined. Maybe McAfee just need time to find the unopened fileo_O

I just read at the KAV forum that it no longer updates. I don't have it so I don't know if that is correct.

I'll probably go with KAV when AVS "expires"... (it updated at 4:17amEDT/1:17amPST)

While that is definitely possible, it should also be noted that McAfee and AOL are both USA-based companies. Using McAfee probably makes communication, support and development of the product easier for AOL, which is probably why they ditched Kaspersky for McAfee (since it would mean greater value in the long run).

Don't know how true my above statement is. :doubt:

If they continue to lose money, then all of their users may be left on a sinking ship....;)

AOL is no longer offering keys and they pulled the download. :'(

Update: As of 8-3-2007 AOL has taken down the AVS offer. However you can use google cache to request codes, and I've uploaded AVS_v25.exe to my FTP so grab them while you still can.

How do you do that? Google cache isn't an official service.

AVS_v25.exe is build 6.0.2.621, which is the latest build of KAV, and it downloads the same definitions.

It works, so take advantage of it while you still can. :-*

And I would have no dialup backup. Time Warner's Road Runner broadband uses AOL phone numbers across the nation for the RR free dialup service when traveling or when at home and Road Runner goes down. I have a softspot for AOL because they were my ISP when I got my first computer in 1999 until 2001 when I got Road Runner. I never browsed via the AOL version of IE just got online and minimized AOL. AOL dialup was faster than any other providers and I tried a bunch. They were not bad and beta testing for them was fun. I got to beta test the computerized service you encounter a lot now when you call a company and talk to the lovely computerized female voice for quite awhile. AOL was testing that for news, mail, weather, etc from your phone (regular landline) long before anyone else and stuff like was fun to test. The only thing I thought was bad about AOL was how hard it was to quit...but I got a year free that way. :D
