Loved it!!! Installed Win7. Loved that more, sorry. (Win7 would be perfect if someone finally knew a persistent (!) solution to the nerve-wracking "quick-launch is sometimes going AWOL"-problem. ) But I loved XP SP3 (which was much faster on my system than SP2)
XP, SP3 on one box and W7 on the other two. Each OS has its distinct advantages and disadvantages. Imo, search in XP is better than in W7. I like the Explorer directory better in XP than in W7. Control Panel in W7 is better than in XP. And on and on.
I've never replaced the OS on any computer I've ever owned -- oops, go far enough back and I did regularly upgrade DOS as new versions became available (up to and including 6.20). Even when I added Windows, because it was necessary for some apps I was used to at work and also it was the only convenient way to get internet access, 3.1 was essentially an app running under DOS and not an OS in itself. So for the last quarter-century, I've hung onto my computers and their original OS until they were no longer functional, then got a new system with whatever OS was currently standard -- typically on an 8 to 10 year cycle. I imagine, given that this one's still running fine, the timing should work out nicely with the end of support for XP in another couple of years and I'll probably be looking at Win 8 (hopefully with a "downgrade" to 7 available). Or there's a strong possibility that MS will face a repeat of the Vista mess and be pressured into a prompt release of a properly-designed Win 9.
When do they stop support on XP? I heard it was 2013. How did you win7 lads get around those 'landscape' screen resolutions? There's no Quick Launch on win7?
copied from link above: End of extended support Windows XP April 8, 2014 Windows Vista April 11, 2017 Windows 7 January 14, 2020 Ah nostalgia. I remember walking into the corner PC repair shop & seeing that 'green hill' for the first time. XP's finishing. I'm starting to feel a tad melancholy.
Well what are you gonna do when support ends for xp? Move to linux or upgrade to win7? Will a machine handling xp be able to get win 7 on its shoulders?
