Are programs such as cFosSpeed or NetBalancer actaully useful? What are the top free ones?

When at home I usually have 2 computers connected to the internet and downloading, streaming, surfing, VPNs, ... I use Free Download Manager on one of them. I have 1,2 Mbit/s connection but it's going up to 8,2 Mbit/s in August.

I would think a router with QoS capabilities would perform better.
A spare computer running pfSense would work well too.
