If you do go with Avast (which i would pick) under program settings set it for automatic for program updates.

Avast free, has all protection modules including netowork in case the firewall gets compromised. AntiVir would be my second choice.

    Good advice deanmartin.

I agree . Go with avast . It will also detect pups and spywares . avg free won't detect these things . good luck .

Without knowing how tech savvy your grandparents are, if the option is there for paid software I'd suggest it, if only to ensure updates are occurring.

The free stuff is great, but requires manual updates which they may forget to do.

I know its not in your parameters, but just a thought.

Avast updates as regularly and even more frequently as their paid coutnerpart or for that matter any other paid AV as well. AntiVir Free has problematic servers as compared to their premium paid offering.

AVG,Avast and Antivir all have "auto" updates. Dont know why you say that.

My understanding was that it was only part of the paid versions (at least for AVG and Avast). So there is automatic updates with the products?

AVG free has auto updates and a scheduler.

Both VDF and program can be set to auto update in Avast, for scheduling you need the pro version.

All free anti viruses have auto updates. Its just which one you like the best. I found Avast is the easiest. I put it on my aunts and cousins pc's.

Well crud, now I regret updating my paid one

I would have bet money that the free AVG and Avast made you click an update button to get updates. I am VERY sorry for giving misinformation then!

Firzen, like the firewall thread which I closed, this one is bordering on going nowhere. If you have enough information, fine, if not, I'd recommend asking any remaining specific questions.

I don't think that this thread is not going anywhere the OP is getting input from many different angles in regards to setup and success with certain Av's in similar arenas?

I have installed AVG on many non-computer experts computers and they have not had any major issues to speak of, while with avast! they complained of a slower response time and being scared by the voice of the vdb updater :) .
The current install(FREE) I suggest is AVG and Threatfire.

AVG is certainly an install and forget it app with the least hassles and little to no performance impact, it's just a matter of that vs how much protection you want. If AVG is used, I'd recommend adding TF also.

I didn't realize threatfire was an AV? Stick to free AV's please.
