I will be getting a Toshiba e400 Pocket PC in a couple of days and would like to know which AV to buy. Is an AV essental on this platform? How widespread are viri on this OS?

    Cheers for any advice.

I've seen several AV's for Pocket PC (Bitdefender, F-Secure). I haven't been inclined to try any.

To date I have not heard of any ITW PPC viruses. Moreover, one has to consider how your PPC might get infected. Certainly the opportunities are limited. I personally don't do any real-time web surfing on my PPC (no WiFi on my iPaq 2215, ditto your Toshiba). I generally only upload web content via Avantgo, sync with Outlook, and install software applications that have receive favorable reviews. Not terribly risky at all.

I do recommend backup software - Sprite Backup. It's better than the backup performed by ActiveSync, and has saved me once or twice already.

I think Avast makes one as well.
