Over the last week or so I've had a persistent problem with a CWS (Cool web search) style of attack, I also had a '1on1' dialler load itself up from a fairly innocuous site without warning.

NAV '04 wouldn't/couldn't clean the dialler even in safe mode but a simple deletion of the contents in the temp internet folder seemed to kill this off.

I've been using Adaware for a while and it kept finding associated files/registry entries associated with CWS Malware which it seemed to clear but kept coming back, I sought further info and found Spybot-SD and CWShredder which again seemed to kill it and peace was restored but whilst not using the PC with only Outlook open watching TV Spybot-SD kicked in and said something was trying to change the home page, Search page and something else. Even with deny changes it would change it and yet again CWShredder would find and clean it.

After further poking about I came across here and the Hijackthis utility so after running it, checking the log against previous threads etc I decided to kill off a few things so...

I can't get Spywareblaster running as I get the error "This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus. Please reinstall it" as others which is hopefully being worked on but the log below is an as is, so am I clean now?

    Also...

If I delete 'taskman.exe' from c:\windows\taskman.exe a few seconds later it pops up again, is this XP's file protection system in action or something more malicious and my explorer.exe in taskmgr seems to get quite big in memory size but I can't say if this is a problem as I've never monitored it before, I've seen it 80mb odd at times.

    Hi Calzor Suzay,

    Download this file: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/pv.zip
Please unzip it to the desktop. It will not work if you run it from inside the zip.

After unzipping open the pv folder. Double click on the runme.bat

A dos window will open. Please select option 1 for explorer dll's by typing 1 and then pressing enter.

Notepad will open with a log in it. Please copy and paste the log into this post.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    The log it produced is..

Please note though I ran Adaware earlier and it found about 4 CLSID references and all pointed back to jgolb.dll in C:\windows\system32

Also I believe something is trying to hijack my notepad.exe, I'm sure the shortcut in accessories off start has changed to C:\windows\notepad.exe, the file is not there btw as I deleted it in safe mode.

    Attached log file?

Please download TheKillbox from here: http://download.broadbandmedic.com/VbStuff/KillBox.zip

Unzip the files to a folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\jgolb.dll

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The filename and path should show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

Then run HijackThis and Fix all the lines pointing to that file like:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\jgolb.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    Regards,

    Pieter

Ok ran killbox, not sure what that was doing as I had previously deleted the file, there was four references to jgolb.dll in the registry prior to running it though, only two after, I deleted the CLSID key it was in and then it found no more references to it.

I couldn't delete the reference in hijackthis as it wasn't there..

Most up to date log file is below. Is it a waiting game now to see if it all happens again?

    Thanks for your help Pieter,

Hopefully this is then end now, I had previously read the linked thread and carried out some of the suggestions. Hopefuly Spyblaster will be fixed soon, I've never used it before but an added edge of security is always helpful.

Well for reference it popped back up this morning, a different dll file so I gave up formatted re-installed and went for XP sp2 rc1, hopefully the added security in this and other measures listed on here will keep things out.
