the chkdsk error is a myth if you read about chkdsk on microsofts. it will hang on stage 2 by defualt depending on how many files you have mine has always done this before i even ever had kaspersky its a design fault of windows xp. look here and you will see that it has always delayed every time by defualt. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;187941. peace and have fun all.this is for windows 2000 2003 but the document is the same for xp you may look at the xp version from this document there exactly the same no difrent i think there is a link from that document.

there is no documented proof of the chkdsk error don't you think if there was kaspersky would not be used by thousands of people world wide. and as i say mine has always had a delay and slight hang up on part 2 of chkdsk. long before i had kaspersky. it hung on 8 and 28 percent and always had a 10 or 15 second sometime a 1 min delay even before part 2 would even start. been like that long before kaspersky. i always watch my chkdsk work.

I read about the chkdsk-error before installing AVS. Chkdsk runs the same now as it did then, so I've stuck with AVS on 2 pc's. One since August and this one since January.

I've got the AOL AVS 2.5 which is the KAV 6.0.2.621 version. If I had some place to upload it so that you could download it, I would. Any way to do this?

    Dave

PS See the download link in the very first post in this thread. I get the 2.5 = 6.0.2.621 being downloaded.

The new version runs well, but I like the older 308 for my VERY OLD PCs.
The AOL servers are strange, but the update errors have been less and less for the 308, but you can use the KAV servers, as was discussed by some other members here, with the 2.621, for AOL 2.5 by putting 127.0.0.1 download.newaol.com in your hosts file and going update > settings > custom > uncheck use proxy servers and save. DON'T USE THIS WITH 308 as the update files are different.

Thanks for the info dw2108, I appreciate it. I'm going to install AVS 2.5 this evening and do the host file change. Changing to the Kaspersky servers doesn't seem too hard from what I see in your post and others, so hopefully I will be able to do it. I take it the uncheck proxy servers is located within the AVS GUI correct?

Some people report a processor running at 100% with KAV products. There's an easy fix for this. Go to microsoft[dot]com and download and install the most recent scripting for your OS, and that will stop this problem.

All you have to do is open your hosts file and place the following line in it:

    127.0.0.1 download.newaol.com

    and save.

Right click on the green tray icon and Open Active Virus Shield. At the bottom on the left is Service, and there you see Update and in the upper right you'll see a green check for Settings. And there's where you disable Use Proxy server. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Did you see my question from the earlier post about the proxy server and what if any other security software do you use with AVS? Thanks.

LOL. I have a-squared Anti-Malware running in RealTime with Avira right now, but since I always liked AVS I wanted to try the new version. That was why I asked what else you use for security, but I am now wondering if you are answering as I'm typing. LOL. I will stop bothering you now though. LOL.

LOL. Maybe dw2108. Installed AVS 2.5 and it froze my PC after update reboot. Icons disappeared and had to do a cold reboot. All worked well afterwards, but never had this with AVG, or Avira. I really like AVS, but this isn't a good sign. Glad you didn't have any troubles. All well back to Avira.

Wow! Not a good first impression! If you go to forum.kaspersky.com and search: registry cleaner, C++ runtime error, you'll find some tools to overcome that problem with AVS. But Avira "ain't" too bad with its 40 gigasignatures or so. (I think, they even have our phone numbers in their databases too!)

LOL. I'm now thinking about using the free Blink Personal Edition. I had it installed before with no problems, and liked it as an all in one solution. It is ashamed that some people are having troubles with AVS 2.5. as it's a really a nice free alternative, but having to spend 10 minutes or more just to get it to run on your PC is unacceptable in my opinion. My wife uses Avast without incident, and I never had problems with AVG. Of course the free version of Avira has had it's share of small problems in the past. Hopefully AOL will get it's act together and make AVS shine. Take care dw2108. I'm anxious to see if you were editing as I was posting this. LOL.

    Dear Joint Editor,

My prefs are Solo AV and free 1-2-3 SpywareFree. I HONESTLY TRUST this stuff. After all, when your number last, you try MUCH MORE than the guys on top.

Well, if they are the bottom feeders forever i'd avoid them for this very reason...

    EDIT:
    AVS.msi dated 10th July 2007 ? Vista compatible final? Hm... DL-ing...

So, apart from the program download being corrupted and the AOL update server still not working with the new version everything's now A-OK? :D
