    Wendi,

If you decide to purchase I suggest getting the Bundle. The extra $11 is money well spent. You get BIBM which is my favourite app. I use it daily. Several times a day.

Thanks again Brian. If your instructions still don't get it done for me I guess I'll just have to look elsewhere (but not before I follow your excellent 'recipes')!

    You're the best,

To install IFW, these are my choices...

    Run the setup exe
on the Select Components window put a tick in all boxes
on the Select Additional Tasks window only put a tick in 4 boxes
..Add PHYock Setup to Program Group
    ..Show TBIView Setup Wizard
    ..Copy TBICD2HD to Windows Folder
    ..Show TBOSDT Setup Wizard

    Hi Brian,

Not to detract from the help you're providing to Wendi (which btw is awesome!), can I ask you if the above IFW installation choices work for XP, Vista and 7? If not, could you please point out the different choices you would recommend for each.

    TS,

Yes, please join the conversation. Any other questions?

I wrote those instructions from Win7 but I'm sure WinXP would be the same.

I seem to recall when installing IFW (a few weeks ago) that there was a specific Win7 selection (a 'Win 7 MBR' choice, or something like that). I could be mistaken, but if my recall is correct, then that would be at least one difference in the installation setup for XP, Vista and 7 - correct?. :doubt:

    TS,

You are thinking about after the install has completed. Start IFW and click Settings. You can add a tick to Use Windows 7 MBR and a tick to Align Partitions on 2048 Sectors. But it doesn't matter if these aren't selected as they only apply to a Restore and in general we don't restore images in Windows using IFW. Special circumstances only. eg. multi-booting.

    TS,

I just did a WinXP IFW install. It is exactly the same as a Win7 IFW install.

    Hi Wendi,

Probably, the best option there is. It will get rid of all traces, and all your settings will be back, like "System Restore", "Defrag" and so on.

After restoring the image, probably it is a better idea to have two separate partitions, one for the "System Drive" and another one for the "Documents". This way you will have a smaller "System Drive" to image. This again I learned from Brian.

    Best regard,

I agree that would be the cleanest approach. Btw, does My Documents have any 'dependencies' that I have to save as well? Also, is there a specific way to place My Documents on another partition?

Brian, of course you are correct; sorry for the misdirection.

Btw, can (should) I install the very same IFW program on my W7 x64 laptop that I installed on my XP x86 desktop? o_O

You can legally use it on three computers at the same time.

In Windows 7, let us say, you have a "User" called, "Wendi". Right click in User > Wendi, on My Documents, My Video, My Music and so forth; and there will be a tab called, "Location" for move. You can move it to any partition. This will redirect the 'dependencies' too!

Yes, I realize that but my question to Brian had to do with whether or not the same IFW x86 should also be used on Windows x64 (or is there an IFW x64 version)?

The default IFW on a x64 system is IFW x86. So, it is same for both Windows x64 and Windows x86.

In the sub-directory of IFW in a x64 system, there are two .exe files, imagew.exe and imagew64,exe, but the default is imagew.exe

    +1 for Macrium Reflect Pro.

It's reliable, not bloated with features, easy to use and has a great support forum over at the official web site. Try the free version to start with.

Maybe The Shadow understands this, but it's over my head... :doubt:

If IFW installs itself in Program Files (x86) folder on a Windows x64 system what is imagew64 all about?

    Future! :)

The imagew64 started recently with v2.71 and then updated with v2.72. You can run it from IFW directory.

Hopefully, in future we will have a true version of IFW.

The program gets regularly updated with new and new thingys.

    Best regards,

No Wendi, can't say that I do understand that (I'm still learning a lot about this software from Brian). If the only purpose of imagew64.exe is for future use, why include it now?

You can use it now if you want to, but the default set for Windows x64 is the imagew and not the imagew64.

Try the imagew64 and you will see it does work very well.

I tried running imagew64 and it seems to run slower than imagew.exe on W7 x64 (I find that strange)! :doubt:

It is still in development. It was just introduced with v2.71 and for this reason it is not the default. The proper x64 version will install in the Program Files directory and not Program Files (x86). Like I said it is the future.

Mohamed i don't think that will ever be the default. It does not add anything in the functionality of the program. The main reason a 64bit version was introduced was the ability to use it with 64 bit WinPE WinRE of 64bit.
I had requested a 64bit version last year, because Microsoft gives the ability to customize the experience of the WinRE. (but to do so, one needs both 32bit and 64bit versions for the equivalent OSes.)

    Dear Panagiotis,

Thank you for the kind information. You and Brian are the experts when it comes to imaging software, isr, virtual software, Windows and so forth. I have learned so much from both you and Brian.

    Many thanks and kindest regards,
