    GREETINGS ALL,

......a friend has a dell computer running win xp pro, sp1+2, plenty of ram and large hard drive. he informs me that for some reason his computer "glitched" in some unknown fashion which in turn has caused a boot failure on his computer.

......he gets a message "something about a boot loader could not be loaded (or similar).." (yeah, i know not a lot to go on with that!) and that the computer goes no further then that.

......i asked him if he had made the recovery disc(s) for acronis and he indicated that he had not. can he use the installation disc for acronis to "re-energize" the o.s.s. by booting into the installation disc?

i had advised him to attempt to use the xp installation disc and try and use the "repair" console contained therein........any ideas on how to get his computer up and running and bootable w/out losing all his data?

Hi, I've never used the boot disk created by DD but I have with True Image and that includes DD.
So, you can use any DD rescue disk to see if it will work but all it will do is allow you to run Disk Director, not boot the system. But from DD of course it can try to recover any lost partitions and or data. I'm pretty sure any DD rescue disk will boot on any PC.

The xp rescue disk - If the data was on another partition apart from the C drive then a reinstallation of XP is possible without losing any data.

    Nothing lost unless you try.

....thanks for the reply..i think the issue is as to how to turn on the operating system selector without having access to anything in the computer as it will not boot up as i mentioned. i will relay this info to him and get his input and see if i can get him to try it. if he uses the recovery console in the xp set-up disc and can grab access into the "main' partition where everything appears to be, he should be able to turn on the o.s.s. selector and get himself up and running again......

It sounds like he may just need to reactivate OSS. However, he will need to have a DD/OSS boot cd that has the same build as what's installed. If there is no boot CD, then one should be made.

Be aware that doing an XP repair may screw up the OSS files depending on how the system was setup. Do you know if the systems were hidden from each other? (One OS can't see the other OS's drive. Both are drive C: when booted. Etc.)

Also, you mention a "large hard drive" but not if it's the only drive in the computer. If there is another hard drive installed, double-check the BIOS boot list and make sure the booting drive didn't get "glitched" to the wrong drive.

If, by Installation disc, you mean the Acronis Retail DD CD, I don't know if it's bootable or not. If it is (and it's the same build as what is installed), then he could try it.

thanks for the reply!....he has only 1 hard drive installed and when the computer booted up BEFORE the anomalies, he would see the multiple operating systems or partitions visibly in the oss (or was it disc
director - i get confused when dealing with him!)...however, i think i remember him saying that the files were "hidden"...(damn, i hate 2-party interpretation!..o_O )

he installed the program but DID NOT make any discs however, he has the original installation disc. i had also advised him to attempt to "reload" the program from the original disc......
