    Ever wondered about the "acpi=off noapic" options that are suggested so often here? Here is some more info and variations of the options:

    linux kernel boot option: ACPI and APIC

    ACPI - Advanced Configuration & Power Interface
    More Info

    ACPI evolves the existing collection of power management BIOS code,
    Advanced Power Management (APM) application programming interfaces
    (APIs, PNPBIOS APIs, Multiprocessor Specification (MPS) tables and
    so on into a well-defined power management and configuration interface
    specification.

    APIC - Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller
    More Info

    The kernel options for APIC and ACPI are,

    acpi=off } - disable ACPI
    acpi=on } - enable ACPI
    acpi=ht } - use ACPI for CPU enum only (hyperthread, interrupts routing)
    acpi=force } - to override the blacklist

    apic } - enable APIC
    noapic } - disable APIC
    lapic } - enable local APIC
    nolapic } - disable local APIC
