Is a-squared really useful at all?

And is it an AntiVirus program?

Well don't know about Ikarus AV but a-squared uses ikarus and its own engine and a-squared has one of the good detection rates out there but main drawback might be its FP rates.

With a-squared the vast majority of detections are from Ikarus.
Just scanned a folder with a-squared Anti-Malware, 1000 pieces of Malware.
    Ikarus detections (!IK): 997
    a-squared detections (!A2): 3

    Cheers

Subset is right, most detected names will have the !IK postfix. But that's because Ikarus detections are displayed first, if both engines detect malware.

Additionally we remove not needed !A2 signatures that are equal with the Ikarus detection from time to time. That allows us to optimize the dualengine speed and lower the RAM usage.

The power of the !A2 engine is the detection of known spyware/scareware file- and registry-paths. That results in a better cleaning in that malware category compared with Ikarus standalone.

For more independent tests please check out www.anti-malware-reviews.com where we collect all comparatives and tests where our products participated in. a-squared Anti-Malware was awarded as best in about 10 tests in 2009.

    Hi Christian Mairoll,

Nice to hear words from u. But i have a question, why don't your organization test your product in AV-Comparatives Lab ? There are many AV-Companies those who are participating in AV-Comparative test, but why not yours?

I'd highly appreciate to take part in av-comparatives tests, but the testing fees are currently too high for us. I hope that will change soon.

    Hi,

That is too bad. Hopefully you can take part in the near futurre. Since there are a fair number of tests, and some seem biased it is difficult to know which ones to believe. Some AV companies have tests performed on their application, and it seems to always be the top or near.
Accordingly, I have more confidence in AV Comparatives than any other test. I do believe they are objective.

I, and many others, are eager to see how A-Squared would stack up in a test such as the last AVC Whole Product Dynamic Test.

I downloaded the "Free for the day" offer, but did not install it. I suppose the key would not be good now.

Thank you for participating here, and giving us the chance to ask and suggest.

    Regards,
    Jerry

    Re: A-Squared 4.5 Free for 24 Hours

For me it works great and catches many unexpected malware (what it does not blocks it detects; better than Avast in my opinion thus far).

Got mine during a "give away of the day" catch. It is worth the price (when it comes time to buy) in my judgment.:thumb:

    Re: A-Squared 4.5 Free for 24 Hours

I find it useful as an on-demand scanner.
It does tend to produce some FP's from time to time though. (but so does most blacklisting software)

its only scans on execution which makes it pretty unnoticeable but RAM usage is minimal and CPU never really spikes, IO's are relatively low to average as well.

I guess you mean a Firewall?

Yes a Firewall is always needed regardless of the antimalware products you use. But if you use security suite the Firewall may be included as well.
Or it may be included in your Router if you use one.

    No i'm not arguable:p

So I guess you are using your system without a firewall then:rolleyes:
Even if it's looks like you are using Windows FW.

Edit: And you are using Avast IS I see, wich also includes a Firewall, but you still don't think a Firewall is necessary.

Yes, A-Squared has to be one of the best scanners on the market. Although to be fair its mostly credit to Ikarus.

I wonder if they will ever roll out an internet suite like KIS?

Once A-squared 5 comes out it will include a file scanner and the on demand scanner. Along with Online armor and the new mamutu 3 its pretty similar to an internet security.
