    Before became a member, there were many abbreviations etc i didn't know the meaning of at first. For eg, i noticed the other day someone asking what a FP was, FP = False Positive.

    These sort of things can be very frustrating, and also confuse and maybe put some people off from posting/joining etc.

    Have you ever had difficulty, or do you sometimes, in trying to figure out what these mean ? I expect you have/do just as i did/do on occasions. If so, apart from having to ask in a post, where do you, would you go to get answers ?

    As my native language is not english,it's even more difficult to find an explanation for those pesky abbreviations.:D
    Most acronym-specialized sites,have lots of different explanations for the same abbreviation,so it isn't that easy to find the right 1 directly.
    That's why I mostly browse to this 1:
    Code:
    http://www.noslang.com/dictionary
    As internet slang is full of abbreviations....

    I usually just google an acronym I am not familiar with - generally the list of websites offers a clue as to what it means.

    Forgot to say, the search engines can be organized in Firefox's built-in search box.

    So i'm thinking it might be a good idea to have a sticky thread on here, which members etc could quickly and easily refer to and look them up. What do you think, useful/helpful ?

    Mm, as it is with some other forums, tis a Wilders thing to shorten names, it must be confusing to some people not familiar. Maybe a sticky would help, if I remember I try to write the name in full to start and there after it can be known by its abbreviation. Maybe it would be good etiquette if we all remember this.

    I'm sure it is, as it was for me, plus there will always be new ones to learn too for all of us ;)

    I hope it will :thumb:

    Often I try to use the full name, such as Sandboxie, then further references are shortened to SBIE. Some things you can make sense if you focus on the context, like

    "I don't use AV/AM/AS/FW/HIPS becuase I don't want a BSOD on my new PC"

    For more well versed members, and lurkers, i agree. But even then i've seen long time members not knowing things, including myself on occasion.

    For those that can't post and ask, due to the fact they are not members, which far outweigh those who are, i think making things much easier for Everyone by having an easy look up chart for reference would eliminate any confusion very quickly :thumb:

    The chart could be added to by members with their favourite abbreviations etc, and then updated into an alphabetical list by friendy Mods/Admin ;)

    This is a very very good point. I completely skipped that thought!

    A lot of times members might wonder why I post some of the things I do, such as information regarding IPSec. It is not a common use situation, nor really the best thing to use, but I have often found small pieces to larger puzzles because someone out there posted something about it. So, I always like to post information that might just do the same for someone else searching out "strange" topics.

    A very good point indeed.

    The ones i posted earlier, along with yours, would do to be going on with. But there are lots of others we could all add, :thumb: here's just a few for eg

    DL = Download

    UL = Upload

    UD's = Updates

    DEF's = Definitions, as in AV etc updates

    KL = Keylogger

    AKL = Antikeylogger

    Thanks :thumb:

    Maybe www's such as those, and others listed earlier, might have far too many to search through, for what we could use ?

    I was thinking of keeping it restricted to the Abbreviations used on here ;)
