Since so many of you guys are runing free AVs.... and it's been a year since I've seen any free AVs... and because I have to get some protection to a friend's PC....

    I'm thinking
    AVAST!
    AVG
    ANTIVIR
    EZ AV [1 year promo]

Which one should be picked... Price no bar!

Efficiency and performance are only criteria apart from high configurability. Must be stable and light.

Avast! is no doubt the best free av.
    1) AVG: Crap detection, update problems...
    2) Antivir: Good detection, crap update function, less actractive interface...
    3) eTrust: Vet engine is very very basic, fast but detection is not to write home about...

Avast! at the end has quite good detection, a stable program, good support, good update method... Nice interface ect ect ect... So in the free av contest Avast! is a clear winner...

    IMO,
    AntiVir - on access scanner
    Bitdefender - on demand scanner

If we use all aspects, avast! is a clear winner. It's the most complete free antivirus. But each thing has its cons and pros. For example heuristics which are only in AntiVir (ok avast! uses them to check mails only).
eTrust is way too basic to be any competition against avast! IMO.

Free AV? Try F-Secure 6 month trial from Microsoft or PC-cillin 2002 6-months from me (PM me if you need it).

But that's not free. Free means it can be used forever. 6 months is just half of the way (for 1 year :p ).

Y'know, the eTrust V7 Promo expired on February 2005 if you read the small prints carefully.

    ok...
How do these AVs stack up against the big boys? [not KAV obvoiusly... but the other home AVs]
I'm thinking... let's forget about the update thing... a 128k connection oughtta solve that problem.

    Let us concentrate instead on...
Performance hit... cpu consumption at no-load and under load... RAM and VMem usage... detection rates.. [someone mentioned heuristics]... UI...
Do they hold a candle to NOD? Can they match McAfee home? Or PcCillin?
free = 1 year or more license please.

FireCat... I'll send you a detailed PM soon... upto my neck in work... Been ignoring PMs myself for a week LOL :D

If u want a free antivirus get avast

    If u wanna pay
And want a light antivirus get a nod32

and if u want a heavier but not very heavy get KAV (best antivirus solution)(best detection)

Avast does what no other do, mail scanning, P2P scanning, network scanning, general process scanning and the best, the new feature of real time web scanning. All this for free, no one else comes close.

gee another war? Were Fighting a war we cannot win with the Terrorists so why not a Good AV Fight LOL. Probably will loose on that too. I agree avast is
The absolute best I Ever Used.. I Used to feel safe using AVG Free but they
fell apart on me. I dumped Everrything for avast. Do a search on Avasts reviews, they have a great success rate on detection.

On latest AV-Comparatives avast! was better than Pc-cillin and SOPHOS.
    But those two aren't free...

AVAST has the edge among the free antivirus but I wouldn't feel unprotected with Antivir PE either.

I don't much care for Antivir's look...kind of Windows 3, but it isn't the look that does the job, and Antivir PE seems to do almost as good a job as AVAST.

AntiVir is easily better than Avast! AFAICT from the AV Comaparatives listing.
    BUT:::
AntiVir scores MUCH lower @ windows viruses and Scripts... but script checking for Avast! is only in Pro edition...
and I don't remember what all "other malware" comprises [Avast! is higher there too]

AND there's no Pc Cillin in that test. The retrospective test should be much more fun... heuristics and all.... Symantec's rating should go down.... maybe.

just curious how much info you can get into here a
Well for me who cares what wizbang features it has if it simply doesn't catch things as good. Having said that I choose antivir since it has very good detection for a free product. with avast who cares if is can scan for virii everyplace under the sun if it cant figure out it is a virus to begin with.

Well...PCC is there at http://www.av-comparatives.org, though Trend cleverly named it 'Trend Micro Internet Security' in order to prevent people from thinking its PC-cillin.

    Ok...
so who said Avast/Antivir can BEAT PcCillin? They match it in percentages...
but the only time they're one-up on TMIS.... is in Trojans/Backdoors.... shouldn't Ewido Free on demand cover that?

Any direct replies to this post of mine?

    or this one?
