    Hi,

My virus came a few weeks ago. I can't open up any windows folders directly, like control panel, my documents, etc., but I can open up specific files if i go to Run in the start menu. If I try to open up a folder, the task bar goes blank for a second and then returns to normal, without opening the window.
My IE does not work at all anymore, when I try to open it, again, the taskbar goes blank.
Also, before when I could still open up windows folders, the system32 folder used to automatically open up whenever I restarted my computer, but now since I can't open up folders, it seems like it's trying to open, becuase when my computer boots up, the taskbar goes blank for a few seconds.

I ran AdAware and SpyBot, and they found some spyware, but deleting them did not do anything. I ran Avast! Anti-virus and they informed me that I was infected with a trojan virus, it was system32/aupdate.exe, so I deleted that, but I ran it again and they said the virus was in commonfiles/aupdate.exe, so I deleted that, but I still have the same problems, and now Avast! does not detect a virus at all.
Oh also, when I restart my computer, it just shuts down, but I'm not sure if that's related becuase it just started happening recently.

ANy help would be great! Thanks a lot in advance.

Oh, and IM running XP Home.

    Hi Sharifa345, and welcome.

Since you have already ran Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, could you follow Step #2 here in this post: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=15913

You can copy and paste the results of the HijackThis log here in this thread, and if it turns out that your problems are still spyware related, then I will move your thread over to the appropriate forum.

Please do not fix anything in HijackThis by yourself, as most of what it will list will be harmless and even essential to the operation of your computer. Wait until an Expert has had a chance to review it here, and they will advise you what needs to be fixed.

    Regards,

    snap

    Hi Sharifa345,

There are a few issues there that will need to be fixed, so I have moved your thread from the "trojan & backdoors" forum to this forum where it will get the appropriate attention for the entries seen in your HJT log.

    Regards,

    Reboot &

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R296 16.04.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

:D Thanks a lot! I think that might have fixed it completely, my computer restarts normally, the system 32 folder does not open up automatically at startup, while running adaware, my avast! found 5 trojans and deleted them, the windows and internet explorer windows are now able to open.

    Here is the new log:

it looks better so do all this

Turn off system restore by following instructions here
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039 for Xp

That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point.
it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

Read here https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971 for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.
On this page you will find links to Javacool's SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. Get them both and check for updates frequently.

The Immunize feature in Spybot used in conjunction with SpywareBlaster , SpywareGuard and weekly scans with Spybot and Adaware will go a long way toward keeping your PC free of these pests.
It also contains links for IE-SPYAD that puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone & the IE hosts file so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

And has links to a browser & security test site to test for exploits that might let these baddies in to your computer

Important!: ALWAYS check for updated detections and referencefiles before scanning with Spybot and Adaware. And be sure to check for updates to SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard on a weekly basis.
