In the article Internet Security Predictions for 2011: The Shape of Things to Come, Symantec predicts:
    • Critical Infrastructure Will Come Increasingly Under Attack and Service Providers Will Respond, but Governments Will Be Slow to React
    • Zero-Day Vulnerabilities Will Become More Common as Highly Targeted Threats Increase in Frequency and Impact
    • The Exponential Adoption of Smart Mobile Devices that Blur the Line Between Business and Personal Use Will Drive New IT Security Models
    • Regulatory Compliance Will Drive Adoption of Encryption Technologies More than Data Breach Mitigation
    • A New Frontier in Politically Motivated Attacks Will Emerge

    My predictions:

Immunet = Will grow and become a well known AV vendor on the field.

Hitman Pro = Big success but wont develop realtime module

Bugbopper = Will perform excellent and be more like Immunet and panda cloud.

Avira = Well made AV if not the best to date. Will extend the cloud engine and make heuristic a bit more accurate.

Emsisoft = Malware database will extend which is needed for on demand scanning.

Avast = Will get back on track and may be able to be in top 2.

Norton = The internal problems that Norton really are having will get worse and the development will slow down and getting behind in malware detection.

McAfee = will make a major mistake making people leaving them once again.

AVG = Will get behind and slowly move out of leading the free AV market.

    ESET = Sandbox and heuristic.

In general: Some AV vendors are starting to see the benefit of working together instead of compete who wont benefit at all. I predict that those vendors will take a major lead in this and the coming years malware fighting.

    Success vendors:
Immunet - Bugbopper - Avast - Hitman Pro

    Necessary developing:
    Avira - Emsisoft - ESET

    Failing vendors:
    AVG - Norton - McAfee - Panda

    My predictions:

AVG: The bits of the puzzle will finally start falling into place. The main issues of stable-ness with should be solved in 10.1 (or 10.5). The behavior blocking will become more like F-Secure deepguard. The problem will be getting people to come back.

Avast: As many of us know v6 is in development right now from what has been said and its success all depends on if the sandbox is v6 rumor is true. However I see its behavior blocker really helping its detection.

Panda: Another good year from what I can tell.

    ESET: Unknown

    Kaspersky: Unknown

Avira: More will come back to them as the word of the update ad being removed is spread. Pro-Active behavior blocker will come in more.

Emsisoft: Great improvements to the app, FP rate will go down most likely.

Safer-Networking: I feel Spy-bot search and destroy v2 will finally be released.

Sunbelt: Continuing moving in its tech and engine. I think finally some major tests.

McAfee: Detection rates will continue to grow, and lightness will continue.

    CA: Unknown

It could happen in early 2011: AV-Comparatives will award the Best Anti-Virus Product of 2010 designation to Symantec/Norton, for a second year in a row.

    1. Big surprises from Prevx with v4 and 500kb Client the first and only true cloud Anti-Malware!

    2. ESET AV will be back to where they should be when v2 came out and hopefully with v5!

    3. GFI VIPRE will keep getting better everyday!

    4. Hitman Pro will get better and better as always, realtime protection is a Question mark?

    The rest I don't care about! :p

Failing vender's o_O Norton? Seems they are close to the top in the last two years. Coming from almost last place bloatware crap to lean and mean. I think you have the Norton and Nitwit 2.0 switched.

I haven't run an antivirus for 2-going on 3 years. The days of relying on an antivirus are over.Sandbox / virtualization software are far better for preventing 0-day malware, virus problems etc.

Maybe more people in 2011 will realize this hopefully.

    Norton- will continue to improve
Prevx- with version 4 coming will easily top the vendors and come with more features like built-in light weight hips and an application control.
Kaspersky- will work on making their program light and help run pc's smooth and fast..
Panda- will work on the FP's and also work on self protection if installed in already infected system..
Ad-Aware- will finally understand that users buy pc to use and work not to just install AV and watch it all day..
Comodo- will develop their AV engine and slowly climb to the Top 3..

Windows 8 will enter the RTM stage by November.

Several large mergers will see the acquisition of Agnitum, Returnil, Sunbelt, Bluepoint Security, and Acronis.
    Others will follow.

Dell will be the first computer manufacturer to officially end production of netbooks, opting instead for second and third generation tablet PCs.
