What is with you Down Unders and that vega-?

Friend of mine housed an exchange student a couple of years back, and pretty much said all they brought with'em was
that stuff. He mentioned (it was a she) it was added or put on everything ! I will have to make a visit someday.....

It has the look and consistency of axle grease! but it tastes like heaven.......

    FACT BOX:

22.7 million jars of Vegemite are manufactured in Australia every year - that's 235 jars per minute.

30 jars are sold in Australia for every one exported.

Vegemite is a permanent fixture in nine out of ten pantries.

Vegemite is made from a blend of yeasts from a number of sources.

Indeed it does: I love the stuff since my visit DownUnder in 2001 and now I'm hooked; I even got packages sent over across the globe to keep enjoying the taste and nutricion :)
Now I found an exclusive supplier here in Holland :D .

For recipes (and more factfiles) look overhere:
    http://www.vegemite.com.au/index.cfm?fuseaction=Dinner.welcome

In my childhood I ate Marmite ( I believe this is the Poms' substitute? ?:p ) but imho Vegemite tastes better/richer.

Here's a funny survey Marmite vs. Vegemite. (Beware though; possibly written by a Marmite lover...) ;)

Did you know even the Aussie Army has got the stuff in its emergency rations? Don't you just adore them OZ's ? :D :D :D

For you UK people: Is Vegemite the same as Marmite ... Gotta be ;)
My opinion is that yeast should only be in bread and booze :D

when in australia and touring their wine country [Barossa Valley] - i was told at a winery that vegemite is made from wine yeast extract. i purchased a jar there as it said it was good on toast, etc. i am afraid one has to develop a taste for it - not me though!! :(

    Yo BigBuck!

Just hit the "quote" button at the bottom of the post when referring to a persons comment. Copy and paste for a snippet. :D

Do you add this axle grease substance to everything?
And, is it salty, like ketchup? :p

Well now, that was quite an interesting link, and I noticed it's used sparingly with those yummy looking dinner recipes.
I like the B vitamin principle, but couldn't tolerate it on everything.

"Yeast is known as a natural source of the vitamin B complex which includes thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folate,
pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, p-amino benzoic acid and several other compounds
    ."

I was conveyed the importance of not wasting food from an early age, so I eat anything. Matter of fact, I don't know
of any food I wouldn't try. A lot of people are sissy's when it comes to trying something new and unusual, not this cat.
You know what they say, moderation is the key.

Granted, I may catch a couple of cracks about my above comments, but in a crisis, with limited food available,
    I would survive.....
