Norton Internet Security 2003 & Port Explorer

Hi all,

If this subject has been covered already forgive my poor search skills. I have just managed to rebuild my PC after an almighty Hardware failure (multiple!!!). With my new motherboard was packaged Norton Internet Security 2003, which I have installed to check out if it is any good, it includes the usual firewall softwares and ad-blocking etc alongside their Anti-Virus program.

The question I am moving towards is ... Has anybody used these programs alongside one another and if so was there any issues or problems or in fact was it a marriage made in heaven (later unlikely I know as it is Norton).

As I am a fully paid up user of DiamondCS products I would like feedback as before my PC problems Port Explorer was a must. Also (I know it's the wrong board but ...) is TDS and WormGuard Compatible with NIS2003?

Your input will be greatly received and much appreciated.

Hi wink,

you might run into some problems with Wormguard 3 and the Norton Live Update. It depends certainly on your OS also. What OS do you use by the way? My personal opinion about the firewall of Norton is very bad, I was using this software myself. I suggest that you look out for another one like ZoneAlarm, Look'n'Stop, Sygate or Outpost v2. They are far better than NIS. But this is my personal opinion.

I can't tell you about the compatibility between NIS and Port Explorer. The only thing I can tell you is, that Port Explorer runs pretty fine next to NAV 2003.

Thanks for the reply, I use win2k SP3. I thought there may be a few issues surrounding NIS2003. I used ZAPro before I dont know why I let my curiosity get the better of me and make me try this bundled Norton stuff.

As you have used NAV & Port Explorer together it seems they are at least able to coexist, Whether the Firewall will be so accomodating is still unknown, my reluctance to walk into the unknown is from many years of crashes, I no longer take such install decisions lightly (best to wait a while than spend 1/2 a day tryin to remove lots of left behind files after a so called uninstall )

actually I don't think you will run into problems. If you dislike such crashes, what I fully understand, why don't you change the OS. I'm using Windows XP Pro, the advantage compared to Win 2k is, that you can restore it, if there's a crash or an incompatibility. That's pretty nice and it made my life and the life of some clients I have a lot easier many times...

I have run both Port Explorer and TDS with NIS2003 without any problems. I do not use Wormguard, so I cannot comment on that.

Well the reply's I have received so far are very positive, looks as if Port Explorer is a safe install along with TDS. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

WormGuard is no real issue on most systems either, for some it might need some extra creativity in configuration and maybe re-installing the NAV LifeUpdate exe file or other workarounds.
Just try and if you run into an issue let's look here at it how to solve it. There's not any reason for not trying it.
In case you're installing any of these Norton tools when WG is already installed, you might like to disable WG during that installation to activate it afterwards again. Might do the tric too.

We havn't had that many actual reports about firewalls causing problems with Port Explorer. There are a few time to time but usually with older firewalls (for instance Sygate 4.xx and maybe some earlier Zone Alarms) . Some people however have reported that Zone Alarm on Windows 9x combined with Port Explorer has some form of slowdowns, but that could also be due to incorrect settings (maybe not giving Port Explorer full access, etc). Admitedly most people's problems with Port Explorer and firewalls has to do with incorrect settings in the firewall and a lack of knowledge on how to change the firewall to accomodate certain programs .

wink: I remember having some problems with Norton firewall and PE. It could have been the ad-blocker part that was causing most of the problem. You can find the details by searching under Toodles.
