Best realtime protection: NOD32 or KAV?

Which one has better realtime protection for a medium risk user? Kaspersky Personal PRO 5 or NOD32 2.5?

 

Both...
But NOD32 is faster.
I don't think the KAV's larger bases protects you more.
Eset doesn't choose as many malwares as KAV but the right malwares (not some very improbable zoo virii you won't ever meet) are chosen.
KAV is recommended, to my eyes, for kinda exotic purpose, the well-known "dark side of the internet". NOD32 is really enough for the average joe like me !

 

They are both good and if you have a relatively fast pc you should have a good experience with both.

As for Mack Jones nonsense about Kav only being recommended for exotic virii, well it is just that, nonsense. Kav & Nod are equally recommended for the everyday medium risk user, Kav traditionally had a larger signaturebase which detects more than the so called ITW virii, not exactly a bad thing. You have to trial them both for 30 days each (free AV for 2 months ).

 

Well I don't say "only" for exotic purpose, but "more for".
I understand you disagree my friend, I just was saying my opinion.
To my eyes speed and resources are an issue, I'll simply vote for NOD32 (or Dr.Web).

KAV is just better at detecting virii overall (larger base, and a lot of it is USEFUL signatures). However, on real time protection NOD32 usually scores higher on av-comparatives i think.

 

As far as ram usage goes between Kav and Nod...well , I've tried both (Kav Pro 5.0.388 and Nod32 2.5.25) and my experience has been that Kav Pro settled down to 9-10 mb while Nod32 consistently ran at 17mb. So, this notion that Nod is lighter than Kav is obviously nothing but a hold-over from times past. Nod is faster at doing a scan but Kav is the best overall.

ZZzzZZz... hmmm? oh! why not use them both, but only with nod as the active scanner => lighter on cpu => no conflict with KAV. If u use KAV as the active scanner => problems...zzzZZZZzzz...

I understand, you like & use Nod and you want to see everybody use it too, you will of course try to spin things in Nod favour, but this is not the question the OP asked: "Which one has better realtime protection for a medium risk user? The answer IMO is that both are very good choices and that Jethro Tull should try both for 30 days each, to see what is best for his pc, in Kav*s case the 30 days are important, because it will take a couple of weeks for the iStreams-feature to kick in, with faster real-time performance (use recommended settings).

NOD is faster at doing a scan than KAV because it doesn't have such good support for archives. So some archives are not scanned internally at all by NOD and are counted as one file. KAV completely examines archives and scans all the files inside it.

This is one of the main differences in speed between KAV and NOD and it is this that makes the "fast scanning" of NOD somewhat of a "white elephant." What is the point of NOD being so fast at scanning if it isn't scanning everything?

 

NOD32's IMON POP3 scanner with their Advance heuristics and the IMON HTTP scanner also using their Advance heuristics can help provide an additional layer of good real-time Proactive protection.

 

The white elephant will stamp out the problem when it becomes active.

 

First let me say, I don't care who wins the debate. I've used them both. They are both good AV's, but there are things I didn't like about both. That said, when KAV and NOD32 are being compared, are they both being compared out of the box? By that I mean, using KAV's recommended settings, and NOD32 without Blackspears recommended settings. Would that give KAV the clear advantage over NOD32 or not? The reason I ask is, there are probably people using NOD32 that don't know about Blackspear's settings, and just run NOD32 as it is installed.

It's just an extra proactive module that Pro has. Both has signaturebased detection of macro's.

 

What does officeguard then?

I'm lost... Personal detects macros, and so does pro?
