Default Question about Protowall vs Host File...

Don't know if this is the right place for this question, but I am just wondering what is the difference blocking bad and dangerous websites using protowall compared to using host files iwth a host manager? Also, I see that blocklist's have specific spyware, torjans, etc lists, so are these websites covered in host files?
