Default Win2000 Server Install Hangs

Hi Everyone,

Have had problems installing the NOD32 2.5 administrator program to
our server.

Our old antivirus was InoculateIT, which I uninstalled.

Install to Win2000 SP4 Server (Domain Controller) with MS SQL 2000/ISA Server/Exchange running.

The installation does not complete and Hangs on the "installing Nod32 please wait" screen
I initiate taskmanager after 5 minutes and find that it is "Not responding". This was tried on
E:\.

I decided to reboot and see what the problem is. After reboot NOD is not running and
there are no services for it. Seems it gets so far into the install and does not complete.
Some but not all of the required files are installed. I tried the install therafter on C:\ with
the same results.

I decided to check and see if it may be a problem with that specific Server

Install to Win2000 SP4 Server with MS SQL 2000 running.

I installed NOD32 to another Win2000 SP4 server with the same exact result and that was
after re-downloading the installer.

Both Servers have SQL Server running, could that be the problem?

Also do I need to go through the registry to remove old antivirus keys (if there)
I installed NOD to windows XP fine even with the old AV running!

I Have done some investigation:

Have installed NOD32 fine on another PC running Windows Server 2000
and SQL server. So now I really have no idea why the install fails! All PCs also
had the latest version of Windows Installer.

Any advice you guys could give me on this would be useful. Are there any enviroment settings that need to be checked? Clutching at straws I suppose

Just a thought - If you have not disabled any old AV then it is possible that there may be a conflict, also it is not recomended to install the IMON module on any server platform. It is of course quite possible that you have already done both of these, but I was not able to tell from your posts

It appears you might have an SBS2000 server? I see ISA, so is it running multi-homed? I've only installed NOD32 on SBS2003 boxes...but either this week, or next, an older client of mine still has an SBS2000 box I'll be removing Symantec CE 8.something from and replacing with NOD32. She's single homed though, not running ISA. Does run SQL for their health care app.

MDAC version?

It appears that it is not a NOD32 problem at all, just co-incidental timing.

This windows (yes correct SBS2000) PC has just this week it appears
got a major problem.

I cannot install anything that requires a service. Existing services also have
major problems stopping and starting, when you do, the mmc will just hang
until you end the task.

Even more odd is the fact that when you go on the internet any site is fine......except Windows Update, if I go there IE will just hang, again until
you end the task. Any other MS site is fine, just not the one you update the PC with.

If anyone knows of any viruses that could cause this? I have scanned all drives with both our native scanner and the trend sysclean, have found nothing!

What prior antivirus was in this server, and is it still installed?

Do you have the other service packs installed, including service and feature packs for ISA2000?

Windows Update uses the "Automatic Updates" and "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" (BITS) services. The fact that you are having troubles with your services is probably related to your Windows Update problems.

Any error messages in your Event Logs?

Well I have resolved the issue.

We use a APC UPS system here, now the version of the software that is loaded on the server uses java certificates. In all versions of the software below 7.0 the certificate expired 2 days before I did the NOD install.

This is also the reason why the install failed on another server as that was also using the UPS agent for comm to the main server.

This problem affects all windows servers running below V7.0 WORLDWIDE.
You should tell everyone who uses older versions of the APC software about this.

Problems we had included:

Service manager hanging when modifying state of a service (or creation of new ones because of installing software)

Unable to contact Win Update (other sites fine on one server)
IE hangs (regardless of website)- our other W2K server

Exchange server not processing email correctly

Unable to contact backup (if using Veritas)

Very slow boot times

Logon to "safe mode with networking" hanging.

Control Panel hangs.

Tell as many people as you know who have reported an unstable server & use APC.

Looks like I will be setting up NOD32 this weekend, finally!!

It looks like you have IMON enabled on the server which is not recommended. Could you confirm the IMON's icon is actually grey and not red?

I did not have NOD installed at all, the non responsive service manager would not allow it.

Wow. I did get an e-mail from APC about the JRE certificates expiring in their old software. I had already upgraded, so I did worry too much about it. Now I am really glad I had upgraded. Who would have thought it would cause so many problems?!

Good to know, thanks for filling us in on the old Powerchute issue.
