Default Ewido scan time?

Hi.

I have been trialling Ewido Security Suite 3.5 after DCS decision to stop TDS3 & shaft their customers.

My problem is this, when i click the full system scan button it sees to spend hours just checking the registry.

I started a full scan & then left the house (AV was turned off & net was disconnected) When i got back in Ewido was still scanning the registry, in total it had been scanning it for over 96 mins.

Is this usual?

TIA

I use Ewido 3.5 and it scans my entire system in right around 30-35 minutes. The registry and memory scan is the fastest part of it.

Did you happen to see how many files it had scanned up to that point? Mine scans around 200,000 and runs just as fast as ever.

If I do a complete system scan, every option checked, it takes about 25 minutes. That's with nod32, spy sweeper and a few other things still ON.
So it isn't normal anyway it took that long on your machine, and just the registry. It is worth to look after other apps. running as well with i.e. process explorer.

To help understand this problem, can you please describe your hardware configuration (CPU speed, memory), your operating system, and other memory resident programs that you may be running (e.g. TDS-3 Exec Prot). This might help understand your situation. On my computer (512MB, 2.5Ghz, Windows XP SP2), a complete scan of about 220,000 objects takes about 25 minutes.

@Oddbod: Do you run any registry protection software? If so, please try disabling during the registry scan...

Well that doesn't sound right, you must have a conflict of some sort, have you tried to disable all AV/AT/AS monitors while scanning with Ewido.

Mine with all options and all files selected takes just over 5 minutes when disabling the other real-time monitors (just over 7 minutes with all apps on) 130000-140000 files.

I'm not at home (which is the system upon which I use Ewido), but I know my scans typically take ~20 minutes; ~120K files. I don't disable anything when running the scanner......

Hi, thanks for the replies.

It's a old pc, here is the spec

700mhz AMD Athlon
640mb mem
120gb HD (split into 3 partitions)
OS XP SP2 with all latest updates

Security Software is

ProcessGuard 3.150
Giant Antispyware (disabled during scan)
NOD 2.5.25 (AMON disabled during scan)
Outpost Pro 2.7.491.5421 (415)
Raxco !st Defence

I have tried scanning a twice since i installed it, cancelled the first scan after 65 mins (still scanning the registry) 2nd scan today got to over 97 mins before i cancelled it.

I thought that maybe the Ewido guard might have been slowing it down, will do another scan with apps disabled & post a screenshot so U can see what i mean.

Thanks.

If it is an old PC, and you are doing it in safe mode, my first idea would be a HD with slow seek times. Your processor is much slower than mine, but I have a feeling it is the HD. If your disk data is fragmented and you are doing lots of seeks, then this could cause problems - especially if the registry cannot fit into memory and you are doing virtual memory seeks. The best way to test this particular theory is to try to do a defrag on the HD and see if it helps. It is my first guess.

No it's a screenshot from the scanner when it has finished.

With a-squared, it takes only a few seconds!

So the answer that it's an old computer...

it at around 80 + Mins so like an a_ _ i Uninstalled it again
reinstalled same thing but with something new i now can't
do a Defrag??

& maybe it's me but my dad always had me do a Scandisk
& Defrag from Safe Mode but just incase someone should

Hi folks.

Ok i did another scan last night, i totally unloaded NOD, Giant Antispy & Outpost, it took 26 mins 50 secs to do the registry scan this time, the memory scan took another 10-12 mins & by the time it had scanned the hard drives the total scan time was 101 mins 38 secs which considering i had almost everything disabled is a bit outragous.

Screen one of it scanning the registry

http://img277.imageshack.us/img277/6...ido13yy.th.jpg

Screen two after it had just finished scanning

http://img277.imageshack.us/img277/6...ido26cl.th.jpg

Any other thoughts as to why some have long scan times & others have short scan times, i left the options as the default installed ones (ie most ticked & file scan set to scan by extention (Im glad i didnt tick it to check all files or it would have probably taken all night.

TIA.

The scan with WinPatrol enabled or not, isn't relevant on the registry scan duration time with the tests...

I restarted the computer, wait until its stabilize, and run a-squared v1.7 beta registry scan and after ewido v3.5 registry scan.

PIII 700Mhz, 768MB SDRAM

ewido
Registry Scan: 5min 15sec on the first test and 3min 20sec on the others
Complete System Scan: it takes more than 7min to scan the memory
a-squared
Registry scan: 11sec

On my Laptop: Pentium Centrino 1.7Mhz, 500MB DDR

ewido
Registry Scan: 10sec
Complete System Scan: it takes 10sec to scan the memory
a-squared
Registry scan: 2sec

Hi Oddbod,

can you install the a-squared to see if you also have these duration scan times, like I did on my last post?

I just did some tests...

180.000 registry keys:

Athlon XP 3200+, 400 MHz Dual Channel - 10 seconds
Athlon XP 3200+@700 MHz, 100 MHz Single Channel - 7 minutes
Athlon XP 3200+@700 MHz, 400 MHz Dual Channel - 1 minute

Looks like the memory bandwidth is the bottleneck
