I've read elsewhere that your windows scripting may be damaged duriing the upgrade from 98se to winxp. and found the follwing -

To reinstall Windows Script 5.6
Follow the steps for your version of Windows.

* Windows 2000/XP

1. Go to the Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en) Web site.
2. Click the Download button under the section headed "Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP."
3. Click Open or "Run this program from its current location."
4. Click Yes at the next prompt.
5. Click Yes at the license agreement.
6. When the installation is finished, at the "Windows Script 5.6 is now installed!" dialog box, click OK.
7. Close all running programs, and restart the computer when prompted.

if nothing else it will only reinstall the windows scripting.
hope this helps.

I'd recommend posting to the avast support forum http://forum.avast.com
You'll likely get help there.

Thanks
Vlk
