Default Secure Folder

Can anyone recommend a good File/Folder protector?
I want it to hide when it’s in Safe Mode and DOS.
I was checking out Folder Shield http://www.baxbex.com/foldershield.html

I’m using WinXP (NTFS).

Thanks

Vampirefo; Do you have any instability problems with Icon Lock-iT?

I’m a little worried about encrypting files or folders.
I had some bad experiences with File Protector 2001.
http://www.mikkotech.com/fp2000.html.

It would cause instability and I would have to uninstall it from Safe Mode.

Never had a problem, it's free to try for 21 days, so you can try it, if you have any problems you can remove it, But I have never had one problem with it, works very smooth on my pc, just a simply right of the file to lock or unlock.

I just got the trial. I'm gonna give it a run.
It seems like a nice program.
Hiding is not my primary focus.
Locking will do just fine.

I don't know if you are familiar with PGP, but with it comes PGP DISK, which not only encrypts my mail but does exactly what you seem to be after with files and folders.

XP Pro has build in File Encryption. * Its seemless you won't even know the file is encrypted until you try to look at the file on anouther machine or as a different user.

Farcry:

From what you said, this could be exactly what you are looking for.

StealthDisk at *http://www.stealthdisk.com

MUCH better than FolderGuard. The program *itself is stealthy! You don't want something on your drive that says, "I HAVE A FOLDER HIDER!!!" It can also hide programs believe it or not. *I'm not sure how this all works, but it's a great product. I use it and can vouch for its doing exactly what it says it does.

From their site:

"StealthDisk is a revolutionary security utility that enables you to completely hide anything (Files, *Folders, Applications, whatever) on your computers hard drive. *After invoking StealthDisk with a secret user selectable Hot-Key combination, anything you have selected vanishes. *(Applications, pictures, music, documents, whatever). *Any type of directory search, file search or software audit, will not reveal the existence of any of any items hidden with StealthDisk. *When you wish to access the files, run the games, etc. that were hidden with StealthDisk, just invoke your user selectable Hot-Key combination to un-hide what ever was concealed."

You can get a trial version, but it is limited to a 10 Meg limit on hidden files and only one "Hide Group" may be used.

I have often told people it's the best $24.95 you could spend if you want privacy. I am ALWAYS looking for privacy and security tools.

For anything REALLY sensitive, I agree with Mickey and would go with *PGPdisk or DriveCrypt (formerly ScramDisk) for the ability to encrypt containers (or even partitions on your drive with Drivecrypt).

StealthDisk looks like a great program and exactly what I’m looking for.
I’m using NTFS and the site says:
Supported OS's : Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, & XP
MUST HAVE FAT32 FILE SYSTEM

I would really like for StealhDisk to work on NTFS.

Hi FarCry

If you are running XP in NTFS all your file and folders are not accessable from DOS or safe-mode.

DOS cannot read NTFS, but if some one else wants to read your files there always some way to do it if they have enough time and knowlege

lobo, you’re right about DOS not being able read NTFS.
WinXP does have a Safe Mode that can see everything.
For some programs the program has to run in order to hide the folders.
When you go into Safe Mode the program doesn’t run, so it doesn’t hide anything.

I like a program that uses hot keys.
So far FolderShield is the one I’m using.
I can bury the program in my system and just use hot keys
PGP is too complicated.

The program I decided to use is Privacy Maker from Webroot.
http://www.webroot.com/privacymaker.htm
The program does exactly what I want it to do.

The Webroot team is a smart group of people.
They make top notch programs.
I’ve always been a Window washer user and never had a problem.

Guess it's too late but here's a pretty decent program that I just started using....It's called "Cypherus."
