i use axcrypt ver. 1.6.1 for file encryption but i was wondering your thoughts on an all around encryption software. if you would be so kind.

I think that all the main stream products are okay. Axcrypt is quite current and actively maintained and it uses the AES algorythm, the new de facto crypto standard. Seems okay to me, there are some favourable reports on this forum (do a search for axcrypt).

Lot of other options on the List of lists.

Important is the ease of use.
File encryption needs some manual actions in order to encrypt and decrypt. Either use a dedicated tool, or store files in an encrypted container. Whole disk encryption is much easier, but more often quite expensive. It depends on your situation. If you're on your own, a simple file encryption tool could be all that you need, for a company it could be feasible to encrypt hard disks.

If you need an encryption facility for secure e-mail, consider using pgp or pki x509.3 certificates (s/mime). Some e-mail client have a decent, user friendly, interface. Outlook (!) knows how to handle s/mime. The Bat! can use both s/mime and pgp.

Winzip too has a good encryption facility, although there was a report about cracking the winzip function, about a year ago. I don't recall seeing it fixed, but it looks like a minor issue to me.
