Default MailWasher upgrade 5.0

Hi all,

A little question with respect to upgrading MailWasher Pro (5.0):

Can you install over the top, or should you do a fresh installation ?

One of those things I always forget

I don't want to loose my filters etc.

Thanks a lot in advance !!!

Cheers, Jan.

You're most welcome.
I told you so it wouldn't cause any problems.
Although I don't use it anymore, I still install the new pro versions (registered) and check them out.

Some more info which I received today:

Important Reminder
You don't need to un-install MailWasher Pro before installing this version. Just run the set-up and all your existing settings will be retained. Remember, if you already run MailWasher Pro, this upgrade costs you nothing.

Installation
Close down your current copy of MailWasher Pro.
Download the new MailWasher Pro version 5.0 from here : http://www.firetrust.com/products/pro/upgrade.php

Follow the instructions in the Installation Wizard to install the new version.
Please note, your old settings will be retained.
If you have a firewall installed, remember that the new version of MailWasher will require internet access

Learning filters in the new version
We have done a lot of work on improving the learning filters in version 5.0. When you start using it, you'll need to re-train MailWasher Pro. This should take only a couple of days, depending on the volume of spam that you receive. After this time, you'll notice that MailWasher Pro is much better at picking spam than it ever was!
Check out our tutorial here : http://home.xtra.co.nz/hosts/nickbolton/filters.html

I hope this helps.

Hi Eric,

Thanks !!!

Some other remarks:

1.
(Absolutely not related to MailWasher) Several months ago I made a mistake which caused that I can no longer see Flash sites
I still have to figure out how to repair that.....

2.
I have to admit that I don't have used that "learning" option in MailWasher

3.
I use several filters in MailWasher; some of them very aggressive, at least one of them.

4.
I keep a Friends-list in which I put every email-account which I want to allow.

5.
I keep a Black-list.

6.
I never bounce emails.

7.
I know, some of my filters are over-lapping (I hope that is the right English word).

8.
I check manually whether an email-account has to be put in my Friends-list.

9.
I check manually all the emails received, using MailWasher.
At that moment they are not stored at my system.
I just check them to see whether something in my filters has to be changed (like for example to put an email-account in my Friends-list), and/or whether an email has to be deleted on the server.
Checking all received emails after being off-home for several days can be a pain-in-the-...

10.
I know very well that I am not an expert with respect to Regular Expressions (used in some filters).

11.
Maybe some of the things I let MailWasher do, could very well be achieved in quite another way in it.
I know very well that I am no expert with respect to MailWasher.
But at least, somehow it seems to work for me....

12.
Well, having said all that, I'll try to upload a .txt file with my country-filter
This is one of my most aggressive ones.
It will delete all emails from all countries.
Like for example emails from The Netherlands ( .nl) or Belgium ( .be).
So you have to be very carefully with this one !!!
You definitely have to have a Friends-list, that has "priority" above it.
And you need to check manually in MailWasher whether to allow an email-account and put it in your Friends-list.
I need to pay tribute to the MailWasher Help-file and the links on their site and the CastleCops-forum for being able to make it.
And some more:
Some emails come not from a country, but from for example .org etc etc.
I have some filter(s) for them, but I need to make more; I know !!!

Cheers, Jan.

Can't help you with 1.

That's some sort of Bayesian filter. It learns from what you say is SPAM or HAM.

Very aggressive, really have to be careful with it. If not applied correctly, it could do a lot of damage.

5. I keep a Black-list.
That's one way of doing it.

6. I never bounce emails.
Most email addresses from spammers are spoofed, so if you would bounce the emails, you'll spam a real person, instead of the spammer.

Overlapping filters can be counter productive. Best to avoid this.

That really is a problem when you go on vacation for several days. It's no fun to go through all those messages.

It's also not quite easy to learn it, but making a simple one can be done by everyone.

If it works for you, that's the most important. Most people just want a tool to install and let it do its job without too much user intervention.

Thanks for the file. It will come in handy and not only for MailWasher.

Thanks again Jan.

Hi Eric ,

As for the Country-list:

Yes, I am fully aware of the damage it could do !!!

That's exactly why I tried to warn for it (saying that it is my most aggressive one) !!!
You definitely have to check manually your received emails !!!
And you definitely have to keep your Friends-list updated !!!

Folks,
Once again:
Know what you're doing about this one !!!!!

OK, I'll try to upload a .txt file with all those country-codes.
